Community Highlights: Meet Tytianna Johnson of Divine Gift Beauty Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tytianna Johnson.

Hi Tytianna, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My interest in makeup beauty dates back to the year 2009. As a member of my high school’s marching band dance ensemble, the influence of all things hair and makeup became an immediate interest of mine. From the diverse hairstyles, to the creative outfits, and to the lavish makeup that called for the constant need to ‘switch up the look’ for performance days, my interest and love for makeup was established early on. I guess you can say the brushes, let alone the makeup industry, chose me.

Though I’ve always been attracted to areas that were design-focused, (i.e., my current occupation as a Sr. IT Design Architect) my love for makeup grew stronger over time. I never really knew how much of a passion for makeup I had until I entered into my collegiate career at Spelman College. Makeup not only allowed me the opportunity to help other women feel beautiful within their own unique identities, but it also allowed me the chance to gain financial freedom and independence as I tended to my studies. As a college student, my earnings as a (side) freelance makeup artist for other students around Spelman’s campus helped me support myself each semester. During this time, I was able to gain clientele and exposure, formulate lasting relationships, enhance my skills, and secure assets needed for what would be the best day of my college experience…graduation! Yet, what was revealed to me soon after was that what started as a key to financial independence was in actuality the answer to a question I’d been asking myself for several years – what is my purpose?

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As a now business owner and head makeup artist at Divine Gift Beauty Co., I am so blessed to be able to say that while the road to business ownership has not been easy, there’s not one thing I’d change. It’s not often that you hear stories from those who have always been aware of their passion or purpose in life and actually landed a career in that space right after college. For me, that is definitely not my story. And while it would be easy for me to state that I wish that it was, the truth is that I don’t. The journey to discovering my purpose came with lots of tears, much frustration, and a whole lot of “Why God?” day in and day out. But the many lessons learned along the way groomed me and positioned me to be in a place of readiness to lead the role of business owner and head MUA within the beauty industry. I needed to walk before I ran, and I also needed to crawl before I walked. The struggles I faced on my journey showed me just that while also humbling me so that I could evolve into who I was destined to be. All I needed to remember was that my gifts were going to make room for me as they always have and always will…hence why Proverbs 18:16 was intentionally included within the business’ logo and branding.

As you know, we’re big fans of Divine Gift Beauty Co. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The business was originally birthed in the summer of 2019 under the name Divine Gift Makeup Artistry and took on a new name of Divine Gift Beauty Co. as a registered business within the state of Georgia. (Fall of 2021) As the sole business owner, I also operate as the Lead makeup artist, specializing in natural glam and eyebrow artistry. I have high hopes and expectations to expand the business in the near future to offer more than just makeup application services. With the beauty industry booming and there being such high demands for more services around the areas of eyelash extensions, eyebrow sculpting, and much more it is my desire to become certified in multiple areas to then be able to service my clients’ full-range beauty needs. As an artist, I truly believe that it’s the love placed within each brushstroke and the consideration of my clients that set me apart from others within the industry. It’s not just about what you do, but how you do it…and in my case my “how” resides in the way I make my clients feel – beautiful and confident!

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve never been a fan of the term luck. In my case, the term FAVOR suits my story best. I have no doubt in my mind that the journey that I’ve been placed on is intentional, including the obstacles that have come my way. Though challenging indeed, I’ve always possessed the tools needed to tackle each struggle faced. Truth be told, I just needed to be reminded of such at times in order to unlock my full potential.
