Today we’d like to introduce you to Teja (Tay) Moore.
Hi Teja (Tay), please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Well for starters I was born and raised in Atlanta and I grew up in a single parent home. Growing up my mom always instilled in us the importance of having healthy clear skin. She would always share and teach my sister and I different skin care home remedies to try and so from that I’ve always been into skincare. As I entered into my adult years I had a hard time figuring out what I wanted to do with my life. I worked several different jobs and I was never really happy in any of them , I knew I wanted to do something I loved and something I was passionate about. But I still hadn’t realized it was skincare. Fast forward to 2018, I had a conversation with my mom one day and she mentioned how once upon a time she wanted to be an esthetician. I remember her telling me that I should look into it and that I’d be great at it. So one day while I was at work I was researching “How to become an Esthetician” online and that’s when it hit me and I realized, this is what I wanted to do! All my life I’ve been complimented on my skin and that’s because of my obsession and passion with skincare products and washing my face lol ! So I discussed it with my husband about me going to school for it, I eventually reached out to my nearest school for information and even took a tour. Soon after that I found out I was pregnant and I just remember feeling like “This is it, I’ll never be able to pursue my dreams” I remember feeling really depressed about it too, taking care of a child is a lot of work, so I felt like there was no way I would be able to have a child and go back to school. So I let the idea go. Then after having my daughter and going through a severe postpartum depression, I remember feeling like I owe it to myself to go back to school, in fact I NEEDED to, for me and my daughter. I knew it would be challenging but I knew I had the support of my husband and family members. So in the beginning of 2020 I got on the waiting list for Fall Semester at Columbus Technical College, then COVID happened, fortunately, the school called me in the Spring and said I could start the Summer Semester and that’s exactly what I did! My teacher from first semester reached out to me and asked if I’d be interested in interning at her salon and getting some hands on, because of COVID we were unable to practice on each other so I didn’t hesitate when she offered to mentor me. I graduated in June of 2021 and became a Licensed Esthetician in July and I’m now an independent contractor at that same salon!
My journey as a LE has been so rewarding. I truly feel that I had an advantage by interning while still in school. It allowed me to get hands-on that I was unable to get at the school, and it allowed to me get further education from someone who has years of experience in this field and because of that it prepared me for the real world.
I often think back on just how far I’ve come already! If I hadn’t taken that leap of faith I probably would still be trying to figure out my next move in life.
Today I have my own clientele and my own brand and I am on the road to becoming a Solo Esthetician, opening up my own salon one day.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is any journey in life smooth? Definitely not. There were definitely some challenging times. Like I mentioned before being a mom or a parent in general is super hard. My daughter is very clingy, so coming home from school she needed to be beside at all times. There were moments when I had her in my lap while trying to study, or type a paper or even take a test. Of course, my husband would get her for me so that I could focus but somehow she would still end up right next to me. So trying to balance that was challenging.
Then there was the challenge of building my own clientele so I could start making a steady income. There were times I’d go to work and not have any clients or times where clients wanted the more experienced esthetician. I started to feel incapable of being great, doubting my knowledge and my skills. But I had to change my mindset. If I didn’t have the confidence in myself that I could execute this, then my clients wouldn’t have that confidence in me either.
There is still going to be some bumpy roads, but this time I’m mentally prepared.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is Moore Than Skin Esthetics, LLC. The name Moore is a play on words from my last name being “Moore” and for me it’s 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 than just your skin , it’s your overall experience with me. Coming from years of customer service experience I am really big on customer satisfaction and professionalism. I work extremely hard in making sure my clients have the best possible experience.
What do I do? Well I am a Licensed Esthetician, or your skin doctor, your skin therapist and skin care professional. I help boosts your confidence and love yourself all over again and help you escape your life’s problems for an hour or more by providing services such as facials, cellulite treatments, body waxes, dermaplaning, lash lifts , brow tint and so much more!
What sets me apart from others? My own personal experience of not having confidence or having low self esteem. The passion I have for helping my clients love themselves again and seeing the joy on their face when their appointment is done, that’s what sets me apart because I know no one else can give them the experience that I personally give them. I always like to say “ No one can do YOU like YOU and I stand by that.
Any big plans?
I have BIG plans for Moore Than Skin Esthetics! As I mentioned before I’m on the road to becoming a Solo Esthetician and opening up my own salon in the near future. I’m also working on becoming certified in other services that I can provide to my clients, but shhhh I can’t tell you what that is, you’ll just have to follow me and stay tuned!
