Rising Stars: Meet Soo Lee of Midtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Soo Lee.

Hi Soo, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Growing up, I was always interested in beauty and makeup, but it wasn’t until college when I really started to practice and grew into a hobby. I would spend hours on YouTube watching videos and practicing techniques, eventually I made a beauty Instagram and posted my creations. After graduating college, I took a leap of faith and enrolled into cosmetology school. I did not have any background or knowledge in hair, so school was a bit difficult at first. I fell in love with coloring hair, especially blonding, and it’s very similar to applying makeup.

I worked in couple salons and assisted the master stylists, whom were also leading educators in major hair companies, which helped me grow as an individual stylist. Now I’m a salon owner and making every one of my clients feel and look beautiful!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely very challenging, especially with hair. Like I said, I had absolutely no background and knowledge in hair. My first salon job was after graduating cosmetology school and my mentor had to work closely with me because I had no experience. Some of the difficult challenges were sacrificing your personal time to practice hair, working 10-12 hours a day, and then coming home from doing hair to study more hair. I still run into challenges today, and without those challenges you don’t grow, so I am very grateful for them.

I spent 3 years assisting many stylists and it was great. If it weren’t for each and every one of them, I would not be the stylist that I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist and makeup artist. In hair, I specialize in color and blondings. In makeup, I specialize in natural looks, full glam, and weddings. A lot of times in the beauty world, it’s hard to balance both hair and makeup as an artist. I am proud that I can do both and keep up with trends in both worlds.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I would say that everything that has happened in my career life (the good and the bad) has happened for a reason. Without either of them, I would not be here.
