Meet Moya Minns of MM Ink in Sandy Springs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moya Minns.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always enjoyed drawing and sketching when I was younger. My mom purchased a calligraphy set as a gift for me, and I could not put the pen down – I wrote with it every chance I got.

I moved from the Bahamas (where I was born and raised) to the DC area for college, and later joined the calligraphy guild there. I learned so much about this art form; and I also had the pleasure of studying calligraphy from some of the great masters of this craft, including Sheila Waters and Chief White House Calligrapher, Pat Blair.

After lots of practice, workshops, and more practice, I started my calligraphy business part time in 2003, and then left my corporate job as an auditor in 2012 to pursue my business full time.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been pretty smooth. I think starting part time allowed me the opportunity to start slowly, make mistakes without much risk, establish myself, and build credibility in the marketplace.

MM Ink – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
MM Ink offers fine hand calligraphy and design services for wedding stationery, including invitations, monograms, envelope addressing, and day-of paper goods. I also collaborate with other designers and businesses to provide lettering for product designs, and editorial style shoots. I am most known for my elegant and classic calligraphy styles that have a unique flair to them.

Being able to do this business full time and bring joy to many people through my lettering has been so rewarding.
