Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayson Wells.
Hi Jayson, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was 11, I played on my first organized basketball team, and it changed my life. After playing in high school, collegiately and professionally for over 20 years, the past ten I have been working with individuals, teams, and organizations, inspiring them to see how the power of purpose and a winning mindset enhances performance!
Through my life’s journey, and 13 years of professional basketball, I have gained a critical understanding of how high performing teams’ function both on and off the court. I use this insight to help leaders build winning teams by doing simple things, BETTER. My “Experiences” focus first on developing individuals to become purpose driven leaders. As intentional leaders, our journey then continues to create the team dynamics needed to drive maximum performance using a mindset of greatness.
More purpose, more connection, more results!
I love sharing my story! I am at my best when bringing my unique and authentic message to people. I use my experience as a professional athlete and development coach to engage any audience with thought provoking, inspiring and engaging sessions. I’ve worked with international brands, elite athletes and shared my experience with students at dozens of universities and high schools and stood on stage as a TEDx speaker for TEDx Clayton.
Guiding people and watching them grow and develop is my peace! While I was playing, that development was primarily within myself. Since retiring, that growth and development has been with individuals and teams helping them ignite and live on purpose while performing at their highest level. I’ve designed several “experiences” that inspire people to gain awareness, accountability and take action to turn that energy into purpose. Two years ago, I released my first book entitled “The Things We Know, But Do Not Do.” It is a collection of my thoughts, beliefs and experiences that can be used as insights for parents, teachers, and coaches as they raise the next generation of students and athletes.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being in this place that I am currently, has definitely not been a smooth road. Whether it was the “13 months of hell“ back in 2011 and 2012, which consisted of retirement, divorce, being laid off, foreclosure, and bankruptcy. Or, the end of 2020 when I only had a few hundred dollars to my name, my journey has been filled with obstacles that I now see were just opportunities.
Other challenges I’ve faced are battling with my own identity of knowing that I was more than an athlete, but not necessarily knowing how to display that to the world. Also, having so much of my life being rooted in high-level athletics, understanding and knowing how to navigate business has been an ongoing learning experience for me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The mission of Athletes on PURPOSE is to provide environments that engage, empower and support, athletes, coaches and parents.
We ENGAGE athletes by having them “Elevate their Game” by identifying their identity beyond the sport they play. We guide athletes to understand the multiple facets of Health, Wealth and Relationships through the transferable principles they learn through athletics.
We EMPOWER coaches by “helping the helper.” Coaches, much like parents have been expected to Lead, Guide and Inspire the people in their care. Coaches are human too, and many coaches live in a place of uncertainty based on external perceptions. Our vision is to continue to build on self-awareness, development and leadership for coaches as they prepare their players for ALL levels of greatness.
We SUPPORT parents by giving them an outlet to ask questions, build community and access information that will introduce or immerse them into ways they can Love, Prepare and Challenge their children to reach their potential, both athletically and non-athletically.
In a world where athletes play with PURPOSE, Coaches coach with PURPOSE and parents’ parent with PURPOSE, we create Athletes on PURPOSE. Being an Athlete on PURPOSE provides an opportunity for athletes to maximize their sporting experience while they build skills that are applicable in industries across the board.
We work across the global athletic community. Our teams are incredibly diverse. From Division I to NAIA, Men’s and Women’s sports, professional and amateur. We focus on the PEOPLE, PURPOSE and PERFORMANCE of our teams. We walk alongside our teams as we create a winning mindset and culture. We’re organized around each team relationship. Team vision, values and voices provide the context for every project we carry out together.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
This is my second stint living in Atlanta. The first time was from 2003 to 2016, but keep in mind that from ’03 to ’11, I was only here for three months out of the year because I was playing abroad. 2011 through 2016 were full-time and I moved to St. Louis from 2016 to 2021, and have been back in ATL for about six months.
What I love most about Atlanta is the thing that I’ve always loved about this city. The fact that there are so many people that are successful and significant in a plethora of industries, and many of those people look like me. I am attracted to greatness and all the different ways that it shows up. Atlanta gives me that whether it in athletics, entertainment, or business.
Having been here for almost 15 years total, I have seen the city change in different ways. It’s funny, one of the things that attracted me, is now one of the things that appall me most. It’s the feeling that everyone is becoming materialistic and trying to one up the next person rather than being focused on their own journey. Whether it’s nightlife, the entertainment industry or just keeping up with my neighbors, this has been a challenge for me.
