Exploring Life & Business with Chef Jasmine Warren of Nova La Vega Cakery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chef Jasmine Warren.

Hi Chef Jasmine, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
As a child, I’ve always had a love for science, writing, & cooking. I was very fascinated with learning about outer space. I decided that I wanted to be an astronaut or a chef. However, once I learned about black holes in space and how you can be sucked into them, my decision changed very quickly! I knew I’d definitely be a chef from that point on. I begin by watching YouTube videos and reading a lot of books before enrolling into Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, AL. There, I majored in culinary arts. During this time I found that I had more patience and a love for baking. After graduation, I decided to attend my dream school, Johnson and Wales University. I learned that baking is a form of science which aligns with my childhood love of science so I get to have the best of both worlds.. I began baking for family and friends and I have now been blessed to have an online bakery where I ship desserts.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely been a challenge. When I started attending Shelton State, I was suffering from depression. I’d just quit my job, school wasn’t going well, and I had pretty much given up. Nothing was going the way I envisioned it. Things began to get better when I stopped trying to control everything and allowed God to guide me. At one point I struggled to separate personal and business matters. It’s hard putting your foot down when it comes to family and friends, but eventually, I learned.

We’ve been impressed with Nova La Vega Cakery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m a Pastry Chef And I make cakes, breads, danishes, pies and many other tasty treats. I’m an all-around pastry chef. I love doing cakes but my gift goes beyond that. I like to believe that is something that sets me apart as there are not many who stretch their portfilio in such a small city. I’m very passionate about what I do. It’s not just a career or hobby. It’s a dream come true to be able to do what I do and be happy. Nova La Vega Cakery is my online bakery where customers can order desserts to be ship right to their door! The word Nova means “new star.” And “Vega” is the brightest star in the northern constellation of Lyra.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe Patience is the most important. I can be impatient and I want everything right then. I’ve learned that some of my greatest moments came when I was patient. Being respectful and kind has also helped me.
