Community Highlights: Meet Lily Hagen of Lingo Plaza

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily Hagen.

Lily, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Being born in Colombia, I learned at a very young age that speaking English was required to be relevant in any career. Because of my early exposure to English, I developed a love for languages and cultures, that allowed me to be creative to acquire fluency. For 10+ years, I have had the opportunity to be in contact with many cultures around the world and teach both English and Spanish as a second language. Now living in a foreign country, having a bicultural family, and raising my own children, teaching Spanish and my culture to my kids became something personal. I have experienced firsthand the lack of accessibility of language and cultural education as a student, educator and now a mother.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No. It is never a smooth road when you have a startup. There are lots of testing and changes we have had to make. Because of the lack of accessibility of language and cultural education, people are not used to it, and aren’t aware of the need there is in the global market we live in. Especially in a country like the US.

We’ve been impressed with Lingo Plaza, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are gamified Language and Cultural e-learning for kids. Language learning is a journey and it should be fun. We currently teach Spanish, focusing on a holistic experience and offer live lessons with Native tutors, original music, original characters and an imaginative, cartoon-based curriculum. Something we pride ourselves on is our cultural approach. Languages are learned to communicate, but you can’t really communicate until you understand a culture.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My husband/Co-Founder, Daniel Hagen. He has been my rock from the beginning. My family. Our tutors and Plaza Parents for believing in our product. Carleen Haylett (Fellow Founder/Partner), Shauna Causey (Mentor), Jonathan Blanco (Mentor), Rajan Kasetty (Mentor), Nolan Rollins (Mentor), Tiffany MMcGhee (Mentor) and Elizabeth Scallon (Mentor). They have helped me navigate this journey and continuously have my back.
