Today we’d like to introduce you to Diallo Thompson.
Hi Diallo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in 1999 and raised here in a county near Atlanta named Gwinnett. When I was younger, I was always intrigued with movies and music, but it wasn’t until my older sister named Jamila Thompson booked a role on Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne” that I believed it could be a reality for me. I started doing small plays and musicals around the city at first. I was able to sign with an Acting agency because of my sister, but still I was just doing it on the side for fun. When I got to High school everything changed when I booked a major role in the film “Barbershop 3: The Next Cut”. This was a huge moment for me because I finally became a professional. From there, I did more films such as “Freshman Year” on Netflix and “Christmas Swap” on TV One. All the while, I was learning to produce my own content and building my brand as a rapper. Now I have my own production company called Vera Visuals and I am starring in the upcoming film “Till”.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The film industry is tough because you have to deal with a lot of rejection before you finally breakthrough. I was doing auditions for years and years, plus paying for workshops and acting classes with what seemed like no progress before I landed my first role. Being consistent is the toughest part, as well and being patient.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am mostly known as an Actor. I have been blessed to be a part of big films with star power in them and I took that opportunity to learn about the craft. My biggest films are Barbershop: The Next Cut, Freshman Year, Steppin back to love, Christmas Swap, The Hate U Give, and upcoming MGM film “Till”. I also am very serious about music, and I have song placements in the film Freshman Year as well as an upcoming EP.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I used to be a shy kid, so for me stepping out on that stage and performing was taking risks. Every time I put myself out there to be judged by the masses it is a risk. Spending my own money to produce a film or shoot my own pilot is also a risk. This industry is about the risks you take because playing it safe just isn’t as fun.
