Meet Jason Walker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Walker.

Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in the middle of nowhere Alabama. The kind of place that if you’re not careful, you will never leave. Fortunately enough for me my family is filled with people who are not afraid to take risks to be successful. I have always been obsessed with customization and standing out in a crowd. When you mesh that trait with not having the fear of failing you kind of get me. Growing up, my brother always made it a point to make sure he was dressed better than everybody so that inspired me to make sure that I always had something exclusive. While I attended Tuskegee University, I painted shirts and pants. After college, there were small projects with t-shirts and the norm. One day while I was on lunch, I doodled a shoe and my coworker thought it looked good so I took my time and brought it to life. Now that I have a better understanding of design, it’s much easier to make shoes that are comfortable but also look completely different than anything in the market.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. It took years to find a manufacturer that could make shoes at the level I was looking for. There were constant samples that looked terrible. Tons of time and even more money were wasted. Some ideas that look great on paper or no photoshop look terrible in real shit.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in meshing art and fashion at a high level. Creating statement pieces that are affordable. What sets me apart from my peers is that I did not go to art school. I was not taught how to do this. I started with just a pencil and an idea.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
For me, the success is not defined by sells or how much money I can make. It’s defined by the acknowledgment from the people who inspired me. Pharrell, Mayasuki Ino, Frank Walker.
