Today we’d like to introduce you to Akita Evans.
Hi Akita, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a board-certified family medicine physician who has been in practice over ten years. I am a native of New Orleans, LA and moved to Atlanta in 2011 after graduating from Brown Medical School and completing a Master in Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health. I have had the opportunity to practice medicine in community health centers and in private practice. I treat the full age spectrum- newborns to the elderly.
As a result of a personal health journey, my desire for motherhood, I sought additional health knowledge and training to augment my conventional medical background. That quest began my functional medicine, or root cause, approach to health optimization. The progress I made with my own health inspired me to seek and obtain formal education and certification through the Institute of Functional Medicine. I opened my medical office, Health-E Medical Center in May 2019 while expecting my second child.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
You’re correct. It was not obstacle free. However, the obstacles have served as examples of the growing strength of Health-E’s network. For instance, I knew when I wanted the medical practice to start but I didn’t have office space secured. I did not know how to look for commercial property or a space to lease. I spoke to another doctor in private practice that taught me the ropes, and I found the office space perfect for Health-E’s start. Many examples like this exist. My mother often quotes the African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
The people and organizations that support Health-E Medical Center and me will go far together.
As you know, we’re big fans of Health-E Medical Center. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My medical practice is Health-E Medical Center, which opened in May 2019. There, we provide primary care for newborns to the elderly and often see members of entire families. We incorporate functional, integrative, and holistic health practices by utilizing detailed questionnaires, specialized tests, lifestyle recommendations, and intravenous nutrient therapies. We address the root causes of illness with the approach that genetic predispositions do not determine outcomes. We can positively influence our health with lifestyle choices and holistic care.
I have a passion for health education and promotion through improved health literacy and self-efficacy, meaning a person’s belief that he or she can make the necessary changes to improve their health.
While Health-E Medical Center is located in the greater Atlanta area, the reach of the Health-E community is growing through social media education and inspiration. I often participate in community outreach through health fairs and speaking engagements.
Additionally, the ways to connect with the Health-E community are growing: health courses and informative videos will launch soon!
How do you think about luck?
Luck is happenstance and unpredictable. Intentionality is important when setting goals. My achievements can be traced back to vision, hard work, and persistence.
