Meet Chris Romano of Atlanta Strength & Conditioning in Marietta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Romano.

Chris, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been a gym rat from my days at Walton a high school. I ended up moving away from Atlanta and took up skiing, and found functional fitness training while ski racing for the Masters US Ski Team. When I stopped racing, got married and moved back to Atlanta I decided to make coaching and personal training my profession and in 2016 my wife and I bought Atlanta Strength & Conditioning. I hold 21 coaching/ personal training certifications and certificates, from the ISSA Certified Fitness Trainer, Specialist in Strength & Conditioning, & Specialist in Fitness Nutrition, and have earned the prestigious International Sports Science Association’s Elite Trainer title, as well as USA Weightlifting Level 2, USA Powerlifting senior National Coach, to multiple CrossFit certificates. This experience and knowledge allows me to run multiple programs out of the gym from Strength Training and Conditioning Classes, CrossFit Classes (affiliated as CrossFit Vesuvio) to Personal Training, Offsite corporate fitness programs, to weightlifting lessons. Athlete wise, I compete in Weightlifting, and was on Team USA for the 2017 Pan American Masters, winning the silver medal down in the Dominican Republic, and will be again representing Team USA in 2018 in the Pan Americans in Quebec and World Championships in Barcelona.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a pretty smooth road. I started my coaching career at a great gym in Sandy springs and had a great mentor in David Flynn. It was at a CF gym, when I decided to have my own gym and buy Atlanta Strength & Conditioning I affiliated it as a CrossFit (Vesuvio) but decided to use my knowledge outside of the CrossFit world and run the gym as a Strength and Conditioning gym with multiple programs. However even our CrossFit program is run and programmed like a Strength and conditioning class rather than true CrossFit. All of my coaches here have to have certifications outside of CrossFit which gives us a unique scientific basis behind all of our programs.

Atlanta Strength & Conditioning – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in fitness, whether it’s helping clients lose a lot of weight, lead a healthier lifestyle, get stronger, or compete at a higher level. I’ve trained every type of client from some of Atlanta’s professional Athletes, a CrossFit games athlete, to clients who have lost over 100 Lbs.

I think we are best known for the quality and level of our coaches. To be a coach here I require multiple coaching certifications from different accrediting entities, so for example, to even coach a CrossFit Class I require a coach to have their CrossFit Level 1 but also either a personal training certification or a USA Weightlifting certification depending on what their area of focus is. We specialize Classes here. For example we have a gymnastics coach, multiple Weightlifting coaches, a powerlifting coach, a kettlebell coach, and personal trainers that are either (or both) Strength and conditioning certified or certified fitness trainers (or certified personal trainers). I’m not aware of any other gym or fitness center that has the amount of experience in every area of fitness in Atlanta so I think that’s what sets us apart from other gyms.

I’m also super proud we have won Best of Atlanta awards from Best self Magazine, Creative Loafing, and Jezebel/Modern luxury Atlanta magazines.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define it by reaching a tangible goal. If a client wants to lose 10 inches on their waste, or increase the size of their bicep by 3 inches, or qualify for a specific competition. Or for me personally, growing the business to the point where I’ve got more time than most days to spend with my two boys is personally successful to me. I ask our clients to have lofty but achievable goals. When a goal is hit, we set a new one. Success never stops.
