Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Brooks.
Hi Nikki, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am from St. Croix, US Virgin Islands. I started performing on stage at the age of seven. Music is in my DNA and continues to be a major part of my life and my peace. Remembering my performance now gives me chills as I am telling you this. My first performance was at the Puerto Rico Friendship village hosted on St. Croix US Virgin Islands when I sang the song I Believe the children are our future, and this is something I still believe in. I have competed and was the first female to have won the title of St. Croix Calypso Monarch in 1998. Since then, I have strongly pushed and sang about woman issues and to this day, it remains one of my fight in this music industry in the Caribbean and United States. I have sang with many bands as the lead female vocalist, such as Imagination brass, Vio international. Hartatak, and Image Band out of Washington DC. I took a break to focus on building my family and came back hard on the scene in 2015 when I released “Know Me Now” it references my growth as an entertainer in the music industry. Since then, I have accomplished several EP’s and singles and music videos over a period of six years. Moving to Georgia was a big decision because I wanted to be where all cultures meet and thrive. Although I am faced with some similarity as the treatment of women in the music industry, I continue to grind and put my best forward. While covid*19 changed how everyday life is, I am blessed to have the support of not only family and my team. I am also a Brand Ambassador of Mutiny Islands Vodka proudly made in St. Croix US Virgin Islands. The great thing about this is it’s made from Breadfruit, and it provides jobs for many, and it’s all natural. Let’s say it’s from farm to table vodka. But with them and family behind me, I am not giving up! 50 years old and still following my dreams.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Life has its way of challenging your faith. Pursing My career in music, I am faced numerous doors being closed, not because of my talent but because I am a woman. I thought coming to Georgia it would have been so different, and if I am honest, it’s not. It’s harder, but when you have that spirit, you don’t give up. You keep pushing.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an Entertainer. I sing all genre of music, but I am most known for Soca Music! I am must Proud of giving birth to my two kids Nivia and Kemar. Also not giving up on my dreams because it’s not only for me it’s for my kids. What sets me apart from others, they call me a revolutionist because I do voice my opinion on issues that affect woman and my people of the Caribbean.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Yes, that tomorrow is never promised. Do what you have to do to protect your family and self. In February, my kids and I contracted Covid-19. It was a scary time for all of us. Not knowing if we would survive due to the information we got from news reports. It affects everyone differently. I am so thankful to God we made it through. Since then, my kids and I are fully vaccinated. I would like to offer my Condolence to all those families that had lost someone due to Covid 19.
