Rising Stars: Meet Jasmine Dorsett

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Dorsett.

Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In 2019, I was having a conversation with my friend who said I should look into having a side hustle not necessarily just for making profit but invest my time in something that I like to do outside of working. That same night I spent all night brainstorming on things I like to do, I am very creative, so I came up with the idea to start making Waist Beads. Once I got the idea, I went straight to Amazon to order everything I thought I would need, string, beads, lobster claws, and jump rings. I really thought I had it all together! I planned a photoshoot, had a few of my friends’ model the beads for me as well. After I thought I had everything that I needed, I made my business Instagram formerly @beadedbyjazz. I actually struggled with the name for a few months before I finally came up with Moonlight Accessories Company, which comes from my childhood nickname my mom used to call me. Once the first Instagram page was created, I believe I used basic text posts to build up the “hype” for my new venture. That did not work, a few followers came over time but I eventually lost focus a few times and had to do a few rebrands to get it right and gain followers. Now I take my business much more seriously than I have before, instead of being inconsistent with the time I invest, I do something towards my business every day and offer more accessories than Waist Beads because I wanted to give other options to the girlies who don’t care for Waist Beads, but still enjoy being fashionable. The purpose of my business is to provide girls with a way to express themselves through jewelry while making it another affordable form of self-care!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, that I can say for sure. I work and go to school full time so dividing time between the three has been challenging. I have also been having a hard time reaching my target audience, but that was because I didn’t know who my target audience was. Having the motivation to do anything towards my business is hard sometimes because my energy is usually gone due to working and focusing on school.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Right now, I am a customer service representative for Kaiser Permanente. I started in customer service at 16 years old working for the popular fast-food chain Taco Bell. I am known for being able to help people, I currently attend Georgia State University to obtain a Bachelor’s in Neuroscience so that I am able to help those who are not really educated on the importance of brain health.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very laid back and didn’t really care to be in the mix or fit in with the crowd. I played the violin and the piano so music is a part of who I am in many ways. I was always very bubbly and outgoing and kept a small group of friends. I loved expressing myself through jewelry and accessories, wearing different earrings and bangles to match my outfit every day. I wasn’t very interested into sports or anything, but I did take dance in high school starting from my second semester of 9th grade.
