Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee the Makeup Artist.
Dee the Makeup Artist, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always had a love for beauty and fashion growing up, but was not allowed to pursue that field. When I go old enough I did it anyway and created a business out of it. I’m a self-taught makeup artist that I took really serious because my first job was at a photo studio that required me to do makeup, hair and dress the clients. I was nerve but didn’t anyone to know that I really didn’t know what I was doing…So I thought. The ladies loved it and the pictures turned out awesome over and over again. At that time I had never heard of a makeup artist, but knew that I wanted to find out more about what a makeup artist did. So, I researched it and realized that there was makeup in the department stores and I found out that you could be a freelance makeup artist. From there, I met a big time photographer who then told me about a famous makeup artist right here in Atlanta that did classes. I needed to know if I was doing makeup well enough to go mainstream. This makeup artist was really busy and she was never in town…but I was a squeaky wheel for almost 2 years before she did a class…but there was one problem, they didn’t have a place to do…’I did”, so in that class i was told that i really didn’t need to be there because I already had the techniques down to a science. So from there my journey brought me to get my esthetician license, become a makeup artist entrepreneur and become what people call me today…The Eyebrow Queen” . I own the first makeup studio in Atlanta and I own the first extended makeup school that teaches people the career of makeup artistry for fashion and film/TV.
Has it been a smooth road?
Business has been unpredictable with its ups and downs. I have always tried to focus on improvements when business is down and try to listen to what the people want from me and try my best to accommodate to grow. I have started different locations and had many teams, but I realized that it is a certain way God wants me to do this so I just have to wait until that time is right and just continue to prepare myself for what’s next. I’m currently writing a makeup textbook and a few e-books that people can purchase from my website soon.
Has there been people or an institution that has played a pivotal role in your career?
My Aunt Linda helped me to see makeup artistry in many places so that I can see the opportunities. My mentor Gwyniss Mosby was the person that told me that I had what it took to make people look good and still today I look at her as a strong mentor and example in my life for greatness. One of my long time client’s Deborah Walton motivates me to continue dreaming and looking forward to making them great and reminding me that I am on the right track.
What type of clients or projects do you look forward to most?
Currently, I look forward to teaching the career of makeup artistry to my students at Posh Makeup Academy and seeing them become great by being humble and eager to learn what it takes to be successful in this industry. When doing makeovers my favorite type of client is the one that is first of all excited because of the transformation that she is about to undergo. She comes prepared with a picture of a look that she wants to accomplish and is confident that I can achieve the look for her. When she’s all done that she feels so confident about herself and is not afraid to let EVERYONE know about it….
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
The only thing that I would change about my journey is going to school for cosmetology at a young age like I wanted. Everything else I feel was a path that I had to take so that I could learn what was needed to get to this point in my life.
