Hidden Gems: Meet Frank Staxx of Sound Surgeon Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frank Staxx.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started in middle school with my homie Victor. He told me he wanted to be a producer and I started researching how we could build a studio. From that point, I saved all my money for a summer and we put it together. As the years went on, I would record artists from all the local high schools, word spread fast about our studio. Overtime after high school, things slowed down a lot and I allowed life to get in the way, I was stuck in the cycle of the “9-5” lifestyle. Which is fine if that’s what someone wants, but I was not happy. I’m 2016, I decided to enroll in audio school. Soon after I completed the program things quickly became slow again and I felt trapped. I then reached out to a friend that had some connects to Atlanta. I sent them some messages and soon, I got a response regarding an internship at one of the most established labels in the rap game. That same weekend I quit my job & packed my bags. In less than a week, I made the decision to move from Virginia to the A. Once I touched down, I knew it was crunch time, so I started reaching out to anyone I could (studios, artists, you name it.) I needed to get in somewhere. Soon after, I met some artists and began working with them. In less than a year, I was able to really put together a strong network of connections that have helped push my sound and really shape the way I work. Through this, I’ve been given the nickname “The Sound Surgeon”. I’m currently starting my own studio facility soon, Sound Surgeon Studios. We’re looking to be up and running 1st quarter of 2022. Never give up.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely wasn’t as smooth as I anticipated. I came out here and quickly realized it’s a jungle and you have to adapt to certain situations and people. Not everyone is your friend. Some extended a hand and a few tried to play gatekeeper. The key is to figure out a way around the ones that try and block your way. It’s all a game of strategy at the end of the day. My biggest struggle has probably been being away from my family and doing a lot of this on my own. I started out with nothing and worked my way up to being in the room with QC, Zaytoven, TI, and many more. I’m grateful for the great friends I have made here. If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be where I am. Your network is your net worth!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our brand represents precision and creativity all in one. We specialize in audio recording, mixing, and production. One thing I always try to do is make artists feel at home when we work together. I have quite the sense of humor so it’s not uncommon for me to crack a few jokes while we work. I’d say what sets “Sound Surgeon” apart from the rest is our personality.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Probably when I first started making beats, I sampled some old music that my mom used to play. I grew up in a Salvadorean household so it was a memorable moment when I took those sounds and made something completely new out of it.
