Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevon Richardson.
Hi Kevon, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As far back as I can remember, I’ve had a thing for photography. From getting the disposable cameras to using a point at shoot, I found at my grandparent’s house and being excited to get my shots developed. Fast forward some years, I was watching a football game and the guys on the sidelines with the big cameras intrigued me, so I wanted to do that. Eventually acquired my first digital camera in 2005 and I haven’t looked back since. I was working as the photographer’s assistant for the government’s media department back in the British Virgin Islands for about a year before leaving for college. In the meantime, I was still doing photo shoots around the island and just getting a feel for what I really wanted to do.
Fast forward to 2013, I graduated from The Art Institute of Atlanta with a BFA in Photographic Imaging. Through hard work and dedication, I continued to refine my skills to become a better photographer over the years. I’ve had to privilege to work with great models, businesses and just a solid clientele overall to get where I am today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely has not been a smooth road in the least. Sometimes you’ll have people flake on you or not respect your time. Other days you’d find it a bit tricky to tap into a certain clientele that you’re aiming for. Not having certain resources at your immediate disposal for certain things you needed to get done and the list goes on.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Beauty and Fashion are my main areas. I tap into some fine art nude work as well. But I would say that I’m known for my beauty/headshot/portrait work. One of the compliments I’ve continuously received over the years is that they love the way that I portray and photograph black women. So that’s something that I take pride in. It’s just something magical about being able to capture the true essence of a person in that moment.
Being from the Caribbean, I tend to have my work be a bit vibrant or colourful in some way.
I would say what I’m most recently proud of is that I was able to shoot a beauty campaign for a skincare brand here in Atlanta. That’s definitely a step in the direction of where I see myself being more active in.
What does success mean to you?
For me, success is defined by accomplishing whatever goal(s) that I’ve set out for myself and my business. One size doesn’t fit all in that area.
