Today we’d like to introduce you to Big Rez.
Hi Big, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In terms of music, I’ve always been a huge fan of music, all genres. I started rapping at a young age, around eight years old. I remember having multiple composition notebooks filled with raps. I had dreams of one day being on 106 & Park. Anyone who knew me growing up knows that’s all I ever talked about. I was influenced by many artists. I took bits & pieces from each artist that influenced me. Bow Wow influenced me to pick up the pen at 8. Kanye influenced me to be myself & pop my sh-t. Common, Pac, & T.I. taught me how to paint pictures with my words. Biggie taught me wordplay & metaphors. Hov taught me how to involve effective double entendres. I could go on and on about what I learned from certain artists but that would probably read as long as a novel. –
In terms of labels, I used to study Cash Money Records, Bad Boy Records, No Limit Records, Roc-A-Fela…& I’d think to myself, I want to do something like this…I want to create something similar to this… but not a traditional label. I don’t want to suck the artist dry & control everything they do. I want them to have complete creative control of everything they do. I created BGBN (Be Great or Be Nothing) in 2019 & I haven’t looked back.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, I actually stepped away from music completely twice in my 20s. I started back full throttle in 2018 at 26. –
Many of my struggles came from me just being frustrated with life. I went thru a rough patch in my early 20s. I was struggling financially & couldn’t find a solution. No one would hire me, I was behind on rent. I was dealing with relationship issues. I felt all of my efforts were a waste. Probably some of the darkest moments of my life, Fortunately, football was something that brought me joy., so I confided in that.
I met Tobe Nwige at a poetry event at Columbus State, I didn’t even know who he was. Long story short, I heard his story & felt like I related to it. I had my son on the way, So I figured if not now, then when? So I said let’s give this music sh-t another shot. I started back full throttle in 2018 at 26, & these past three years have been amazing.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in putting words together & making them flow beautifully. I’m most proud of creating BGBN & my two EPs “The Biggest Vibe” & “Velour”. I think the thing that sets me apart from most is my consistency & my sound. I’m not trying to ride the current wave I just stick to what I know…& that’s making vibe music.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
That’s a difficult question, I suck at picking favorites because it’s always subject to change.
Probably the winter we rode four-wheelers for hours through the woods with my stepdad. It was during the winter break I had to be like 14. We lived in a wooded area, so there were a ton of hills & back roads. The ground & tree lines were completely white. It rarely snows in the south, but this particular year we got hit with a ton of snow.
