Today we’d like to introduce you to Wren Breen.
Hi Wren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been creating since before I have memories. Art has always been my passion and lifeblood and I carried that through to college where I decided to major in Graphic Design at Georgia Southern University. While I was in college, I interned as the in-house graphic designer at a marketing firm in Albany, GA one summer where I learned the ropes of professional design, customer interaction, and working under creative direction. I carried that experience and insight into small business into the formation of my own design company, Wren Design, which I started fresh out of college in 2012. Along with more corporate branding, business collateral, print material, etc., I really lit up at the prospect of working in the music industry. I gained a serious passion for live music beginning in 2010 and have been developing and honing my style and skills as well as creating professional relationships and friendships with bands, musicians, and other artists of all kinds over the past twelve years. Today, I am an established artist, designer, printmaker, and merchandise producer in the music scene I’m a part of. I balance the best of both worlds with the creative freedom and endless inspiration of the music and art I love with the stability, graphic design structure, and team-oriented collaboration I enjoy so much with a part-time design job with the cargo division at Delta Airlines.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not. Traumatic experiences in my early twenties coupled with resulting mental health struggles made my road for all of my twenties a pretty rocky one. I desired working in a team scenario and finding a position with some stability and consistency, but crippling anxiety made that pretty much unattainable. Even though it was very isolating, I’m so grateful that I was able to work on my own and develop my skills and relationships at my own pace while I healed and sifted through the pieces. It was not an easy path, but today, I’m so grateful for the experiences that brought me to where I am both as an artist and a man. I have a rich life story full of many peaks and valleys that I constantly draw on for inspiration, hope, creativity, and context for my art, myself, and for others. I’ve become a huge mental health advocate and resource and the next place I foresee my own art going is connecting the bridges between my life experiences, healed trauma, love of language, and visual creation, however that comes into form.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Wren Design is the name I practice my various crafts beneath. I’m a graphic designer, print-maker, illustrator, painter, and drawer, and Wren Design is where I bring it all together. Something that sets me apart from others and that I really enjoy about my work is the way I marry the best aspects of the expression of raw, inspired creativity with the problem-solving nature and refined simplicity of graphic design. I call my style Business-Funk. It’s all aspects of me under one umbrella, woven, sculpted, painted, and stirred into a plethora of different results for all sorts of different clients – law firms, bands, airlines, collectors, artists, myself, and all sorts of others. I offer branding, apparel design and production, fine art, illustration, and merchandise design, direction, and consultation among other services. I truly love what I do!
What does success mean to you?
Success, to me, is living in communion and connection with yourself, your environment, your heart’s purpose, your needs, and the ability to care for your loved ones and those with less. If my spirit is free, my relationships and my health are tended to, my finances and my relationship to them are in a good place, I’m finding joy in what I do, and there are dogs around me, I am successful.
