Meet Amaris Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amaris Jones.

Hi Amaris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I originally started experimenting and playing in makeup in 2008, in my early years of middle school. I’ve always loved makeup, hair, & beauty. I was extremely fascinated with drag queens and Ru Paul. I literally sat on YouTube for hours watching drag queens perfect their faces and I was extremely intrigued. So from that day forward, I knew that makeup would soon be my passion and hobby. I watched YouTube studies face shapes, practiced on my face, learned that what I liked and what I didn’t like. By this time, I was 15/16 years old doing a full face including lashes, but the crazy thing is that I was terrified of doing other people’s makeup. I was scared of disappointed, rejection, not being able to please everyone, just plain out SCARED. It took over five years for me to step out of my comfort zone and to start taking clients and making this my source of income. I eventually started doing makeup and it was unfortunately in my mom’s living room. I took as many clients as I could, Practiced, studied other Makeup artists and celebrity makeup artists. I knew that there was always room for improvement and I believed that I would be the best at what I loved to do and that was makeup. After doing makeup in my mom’s living room for about a year, I finally put in my big girl pants and I moved into a local salon. I knew that I didn’t have a lot of clientele or even consistent clients but I did know that joining a salon would bring me more clients and also get my name out in the city. From there, I worked as hard as I could to build my clientele, perfect my craft & never gave up. I eventually gained long-term clients that came to be every week. From there, I was booked for weddings and other big events.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, like others there’s been some bumps in the road along my journey as a MUA. I literally had to build my clientele from the bottom, no friends, no nothing. That lead to me coming out of my comfort zone and moving into a salon with other stylists and artists.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a full-time makeup artist, I specialize in glamorous Beauty enhancements and other beauty needs. I’m known for my soft glams. I’m most proud of my drive and determination in the beauty industry.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that others wouldn’t know is that I’m extremely good at drawing portraits or replicating anything I see just from looking at it.
