Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Myrick.
Hi Regina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2014, I was fully engaged with corporate America in the heat of South Florida and ready for the long haul of climbing the corporate ladder until retirement. Sounds thrilling, right? Yeah, I didn’t think so either. But it was what I thought was necessary and why I double-majored in Business Administration and International Business.
My husband and I married in January 2015 and he sat me down one day after a typically exhausting day at work and asked me outright: “Is this really what you want to do with your life? What if you could do something you actually love and turn it into a viable career? What would you choose to do if that were possible?” And that was the most life-altering question anyone had never asked me before. I knew photography was that one thing. Since I was a young child, I have poured over albums and prints of old photos from family and friends. To this day, I still have printed images of my great grandparents from the 1920s.
So I went back to school at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale to complete another degree in Photography and Graphic Design. During my final semester, I was required to work an internship with a local photography company, and I discovered the world of wedding photography. I worked for an event services conglomerate that offered everything from event and wedding planning to videography and photography, to live entertainment, to bigger-than-life decor. And I was hooked from day one! Any assisting, second-shooting, or lead photographer position that they needed — I was there. It was the biggest blessing and fastest way to dive head-first into the event and wedding industry, and I could not be more grateful for that experience.
In 2017, my husband and I relocated to Asheville, North Carolina for the more outdoorsy lifestyle, slower pace, and wide open spaces. I still can’t believe we get to live in such a beautiful place! The wedding and event industry is drastically different and it took me a bit to find my footing without any friends or even acquaintances in the area. I began working with any photographers who would have me — assisting, second-shooting, anything! Even today, I continue to work with many of them as we became fast friends. Being willing and able to work with anyone who needs me is how I was able to rebuild my business, create lifelong industry friends, and travel from North Carolina, to Georgia, to Tennessee and beyond doing what I love in wedding and event photography. Because of the passion in my heart for capturing these milestone, once-in-a-lifetime moments, my work has never been about me and making my own name famous — it’s about the couples, families, and future generations who will forever cherish these photographic images.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have certainly been struggles on the road to success. And I still don’t believe ‘success’ is a final destination kind of place. Every little success makes each struggle worthwhile.
I’m sure everyone (in any industry) can say that the year 2020 brought a heap of struggles with the COVID-19 pandemic. An unforeseen circumstance that continues to affect how we do business even today and how we plan for the future.
But even before that, I would say the biggest struggle was relocating from the depths of South Florida to the gorgeous mountains of North Carolina in 2017. I knew it would be difficult to rebuild and grow my business having moved to a city where no one knew who I was or what I was about. Instead of sulking into the pits of despair, I reached out to everyone and anyone I could find that had a similar vision. It would be untrue for me to say they were all welcoming or even responsive, but those who did respond and give me an opportunity (or even helpful advice) have proven to be those who are also the most successful in this industry. And as I mentioned before, we have found value in each others’ friendship, as well as our work relationship.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The basics of what I do: Weddings, couples, and engagement/proposal photography.
My specialty and what I am known for is creating a photography experience that fits the individual couple I am working with in that moment. Romantic, quiet, and sweet? I can capture that. Funny, outgoing, playful? I do that too. Spending time in conversation with my couples and knowing who they are as individuals and what they represent as a couple are what sets my imagery apart. I am a creative and artistic person who wants to make imagery that captures who a couple actually is — their story, personality, love for each other and their families, and whatever else makes them unique.
I am most proud of the reviews and feedback I get from my clients. When they tell me how much they were able to enjoy their experience — even if they dreaded the idea of having their picture taken — and how in love they are with their final gallery, my heart overflows with excitement and gratitude.
What also sets me apart is the amount of experience I have collected in my years of work. Professionalism is a staple in my business. With my background in Business Administration and having started my career working with an established event and wedding company, I never wanted to start at the bottom tier. My couples know that I don’t just talk a big game — I have experience from everything going right to everything going wrong and still creating the best possible outcome with a big smile and some laughs along the way.
What does success mean to you?
Success, for me, means doing work that fulfills my deepest passions while working with clients and other vendors who value my personality, expertise, and creativity. As mentioned before, I don’t believe success is an end-goal or final destination. It’s an ever-moving bullseye that keeps challenging and motivating me to move forward. This is what keeps the best from growing stagnant and complacent with their work.
