Today we’d like to introduce you to Salema Taylor.
Hi Salema, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The journey to the creation of Freestyle Adventure Club started when I was a child growing up in Jamaica. My siblings and I spent all our time outside, climbing trees, riding bicycles, going to the beach, going sailing and snorkeling on our parents’ catamaran sailboat (which happens to be named Freestyle), camping out in our yard in tents, running through the bushes, and using our imagination. When I relocated to the United States, the adventures continued, with the addition of travel and my interest in experiencing other cultures. Fast forward to adulthood, I became somewhat of a nomad, moving to different states, and traveling overseas when possible. The real catalyst for wanting to have my own business in 2010 was my son, Tai. I wanted to have the freedom to participate in his life without having to ask anyone’s permission for days off, or spending a majority of my time in an office, only to come home and be ridiculously tired and not fully engage in the little time I had with him before bed. So my entrepreneurial spirit awakened. I tried different businesses over the years that failed. What I realized was that I was trying to be someone else instead of staying true to who I am, what I love, and where my passion lies. I am an adventurer at heart. I love to experience this world, and I love sharing experiences with others. I thought of the joys of my childhood in Jamaica, and Freestyle Adventure Club was born. Backyard Glamping and Adventure Travel. It has evolved over the last year, with a purchase of 38 acres in Northwest Georgia, as we are in the beginning stages of building a Glamping resort and spa.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far, it has been a smooth road with Freestyle adventure Club being a mobile Glamping business. We did have one incident with a customer who rented and someone smoked inside our tent. In our rental policy, that is not allowed, and there is a fee for it. He never paid the fee, so we implemented having a credit card on file for incidentals. I’d say the hardest part so far is cleaning and drying the tents. I do anticipate quite a few bumps on the journey to opening the glamping resort. However, It will all be a learning experience and 100% worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work and what I specialize in is research, planning, and organization. I am very resourceful and I get things done in the most efficient way. What sets me apart is how unconventional I am. I go with the wind, and I think outside of the box, all while pulling small pieces from the box to implement a structured and functional result. I’ve applied this to my everyday life, and the thing that I am most proud of is being able to retire my mom, and to be a constant presence in my children’s lives, showing up without any restrictions.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is my entire time as a child in Jamaica. I mentioned this early on in the interview. Having the freedom to play outside, climb trees (sit in them eating fruit), going to the beach, swimming in rivers. I was free. Free to be a child experiencing life one moment at a time.
