Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicola Gibson.
Nicola, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Hair has always been a passion of mine. I first learned to braid at the age five and would help my mother and her clientele. Throughout high school I was one of the go to braiders, whether it be at lunch or after school, I always had my hands in someone’s head! After graduation, I moved from California to Atlanta to further pursue my dreams. After attending cosmetology school at Empire, Dunwoody campus my opportunities have been endless. From photo shoots, local celebrity styling and building my clientele, I’ve grown so deep with my craft and talent. With Gods guidance, I now operate my own salon suite in Buckhead Atlanta. Throughout the five years I’ve been in Atlanta and all my accomplishments, I can honestly say this is still my beginning!!! I have so much more to accomplish and I have a wonderful support system to help carry me along.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to being a cosmetologist has not been completely smooth. There were obstacles and challenges along with growth that I had to learn to master while beginning my journey as an entrepreneur. Learning social skills, professionalism, knowing how to give a client the perfect look for them or even making women feel comfortable enough to want to continue to receive my services. Learning to become the best ‘people person’ I can be.
How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
Growing up, I was very energetic, determined and outgoing. I didn’t like to be told ‘no’ so I always worked hard for what I wanted. I loved hanging out with friends and being as I grew up by the beach, that basically was my favorite place to go. I have three other siblings so there was never a dull moment. Always filled with laughter, yet so creative with everything that came across my path.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is when I was about seven or eight years old, it was a normal weekday and my mother had woke my sister and I up to start getting ready for the school day. We normally wore school uniforms but my mom told us we could wear our regular clothes that day so we were super excited about that! As we finished getting ready and began to grab our backpacks, my mother then told us to leave those because we wouldn’t need them. Confused I asked, “Well why not?” She proceeded to say “because we’re going to Disneyland” Those were the best words a child could hear! Skipping school to go to Disneyland. She definitely won mom of the century award.
What are your plans for the future?
My plans for the future are to continue to have positive growth. Continue showcasing and sharing my talent with others. Eventually, expand my brand as its growth progresses. Being known and recognized for my talents.
