Daily Inspiration: Meet Jessica Guevara

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Guevara.

Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My story begins like most. A hobby that became a passion, that became a reality. Though I studied foreign language in college and was preparing to enter the education profession, I was always drawn to arts and design. Shortly after having children, I became THAT mom. The one that has a camera attached to the hip. A friend suggested I buy a Canon Rebel. And that’s when my photography journey began. For years, photography was just a hobby. I photographed our family outings and vacations, and once and a while, I’d have friends or family ask me to photograph a special occasion.

In early 2020, after strong and persistent nudging from those close to me, I decided to take the leap. It was then that that hobby took on the shape as something more. Shortly after, we were thrown into the midst of a pandemic and a shutdown and it seemed as if the end of this endeavor had arrived before I had even had a real chance to start it. But by the summer, I started shooting by donations, setting aside every dollar to be able to purchase “THE camera.” I also learned as much as I possibly could– lighting, posing, editing. Fast forward to today and I’ll be wrapping up year two in just a couple of weeks. It has been quite the journey, an absolutely beautiful one. I’ve had the opportunity to meet countless families and individuals that begin as strangers and by the end of the hour leave as friends. It’s such an honor and privilege to capture such precious memories. And I am excitedly and expectantly looking forward to what the future holds.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t believe that anything in life will be smooth roads. It’s the challenges and obstacles that make you grow personally and professionally. I would say the greatest struggle personally was doubt. I follow and admire some incredible photographers and in the photography industry, the bar is set incredibly high. It’s easy to doubt whether or not you have what it takes to be a part of such a talented community. But it’s important to remember that each of us have to start somewhere and it’s our responsibility through growth and hard work that we will determine where we end. I’ve had to learn to get out of my head, toss doubt out of the window and have fun in the process of getting to where I’d like to be.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I consider myself a portrait photographer and especially enjoy photographing in natural light. I’m one of those golden hour chasers. The grins and warmth of families, the strength and sense of accomplishment on the faces of the graduates, and the softness and innocence of a newborn are what I enjoy the most as a photographer. It’s the details, the connections, and emotions that I do my best to convey through each image captured that makes me most proud.
