Exploring Life & Business with Dominique Maggette of The Maggette Collection

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Maggette.

Dominique, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I used my personal story and adversity to create an empowering line of make-up that helps people remove their masks and embrace who they really are.

I created a faith based make up line in my namesake to inspire people. The line is cruelty-free and helps people to look their best even when they don’t feel worthy or are looking to create a different persona. Based on my personal trials and tribulations, I was inspired to help myself and other people change their lives one make-up application at a time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a business can be a piece of work especially when you’re single mother of three. My biggest challenge is managing my time. At times it’s easy to lose focus of things which can cause an inconsistency. I’d have to say that a current obstacle I have is marketing my product and increasing my brand awareness.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The Maggette Collection?
The Maggette Collection wants people to use the product line as a way to accentuate their natural beauty to attract others to the real them (who they are on the inside). This beauty line isn’t to be used to create fake personas or to cover up for a less than satisfying life. The Maggette Collection wants people to be bold, to be poise and to accept their own unique version of their beauty. Too often, the beauty industry sets not only unrealistic standards of beauty but creates trends to have people looking alike. The Maggette Collection is different because it believes everyone is unique and it is that uniqueness that truly is beautiful. We sell a variety of shades and products to help diverse groups of people feel beautiful from the inside-out. The line offers a wide range of lip, cheek, skin, eye, and highlighter products that are not only affordable but also help to support a black-owned woman business.

This amazing collection of make-up encourages people to tell their truth and take off their mask. The line is cruelty-free and helps women to look their best even when they don’t feel worthy or are looking to create a different persona and wearing makeup that reflects who they really are, honoring the HER in them. I am most proud of not only making women feel more comfortable with themselves inside-out but also being in business for two years and successfully placing my product in a brick-and-mortor, The Creative Rizk, in Georgia within the first year of business.

I want people who buy my products to know that they are already HER. While they are supporting my vision, they are also doing something for themselves. They are creating their own story and showcasing their own beauty by addressing the past with their best face forward. I’ve been there and I am HER. I know what it is like to use make-up as a weapon, not only to trick others into perceiving me as someone I wasn’t but to use that weapon upon myself. Now, this make-up line helps people embrace who they are. It is about accentuating our own natural beauty and being comfortable in our own skin, flaws and all.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My advice to anyone starting out in business is that if you remember your WHY and stay focused, you will see growth in your business and within yourself. Success doesn’t come overnight it comes with faith, patience, and hard work. Focusing on your personal business goals is key! Comparing yourself to others is the biggest form of discouragement. Yes, there are competitors are out there but what will always keep you in the race is being unapologetically yourself, original and staying consistent.

I’m still learning and growing given that I have been an entrepreneur for two years now. I took the necessary steps before actually starting off i.e., taking classes, branding boot camps, the back ends of my brand but in the process of that, I wish I knew how to marketing better, making money while sleeping. I feel like those classes didn’t teach me that.
