Today we’d like to introduce you to Safiyyah O’Quinn.
Hi Safiyyah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
“I’m sorry there’s nothing else we can do for her.” Those are the words spoken by my mother’s oncologist May 2016. Two days before my 31st birthday, I lost my favorite girl in the world, my mother Susie Amin, to ovarian cancer.
That life-changing moment was a rebirth for me. If you’ve ever lost a loved one you’ll understand that grief is just loved with no place to go. After losing her, I was lost and didn’t know what to do so I started sharing my experience online in hopes to connect with other people who had experienced something similar and who looked like me. After searching, I decided to be that voice and soqweenly lifestyle was born March 2019. Losing my mother started my journey of self-discovery, therapy, wellness and motivational speaking.
I am a lifestyle storyteller for purpose driven people + brands. Sharing my intentional living journey with honesty + humor. I’m also the co-founder of The Susie Amin Foundation where our mission is to preserve and enrich the lives of families in underserved communities through food distribution, wellness and life skill programs.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been far from a smooth ride. It’s been a character building six years I’d say. My biggest struggle was changing my mindset from being a victim to a victor. My next challenge was finding the right help. It took me a few times to find the right therapist but I finally found Dr. Andrea Francis who saved me.
We’ve been impressed with Soqweenly Lifestyle + The Susie Amin Foundation, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
By day I’m a product marketing manager at Microsoft.
I’m the creator of soqweenly lifestyle. A writing and marketing consulting company. I use my 15 years of marketing plus the experience of losing my mother to help others in their business. I consider myself the prerequisite to scale your business.
I am unique because I help entrepreneurs address the foundation of their business first which is their mindset. We address the skeletons in the closet which often are barriers in their business preventing them from growing and connecting with customers. Then we collaborate to build a scalable marketing plan.
I’m most proud of my community work with The Susie Amin Foundation. The foundation allows me to roll my sleeves up and live out all the things I write about. Doing the work in the community is how I bring about change.
When my clients work with me, I always hear this is more than I thought I’d get but it’s what I needed to grow.
Any big plans?
I’m looking forward to feeding 1,000 families in 2022!!!
Last year we fed 400.
This year I launched a full marketing campaign for our MLK food distribution drive. That’s my goal for the foundation to feed 1,000 families in honor of my mother who was an entrepreneur too.
