Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica It’s All Good.
Hi Jessica, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have been saying I wanted to be a famous actor since I was 12. After studying theatre from middle school up through college, I graduated with a degree in theatre and performing arts then moved to Atlanta with the intent to move to LA or New York. Once I got truly settled after a few years of roughing it out, I fell in love with Georgia and decided to stay. Being here turned me into a comedian. I got involved with improv then gave a speech that was so funny that the college that booked me for that speech told me that they felt like I was a real-life comedian. So I became one. The rest is sort of history.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The smoothest part of the road for me was definitely being funny on stage. However, there were A LOT of struggles getting here. When I first moved here, I faced homelessness. Once I got my apartment, I almost lost it the following year. The gig life is a very unsteady life. So the finances fluctuate. It can be very scary making that kind of risk.
Once I started finding my way, I had to deal with people attempting to take advantage. Being a young woman sometimes put me in places of folks assuming they could cross certain lines. Being Black meant I had some racial moments that were heartbreaking and or scary. I even had to deal with a death that was so devastating that it was hard to get back on stage and be funny for several months.
I feel like I’ve overcame a lot. But at the end of the day, I know there are those who had it much worse. So I don’t complain. Just thankful I’m here.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a stand-up comedian first. But then I am also an emcee and DJ. I host a lot of karaoke. My work also includes other types of performance that comes up sometimes.
I am known for being one of Atlanta’s popular clean comedians and I do specialize in clean comedy and improv. My energy is what sets me apart. Some gigs that I am booked for are simply because of my big personality’s reputa4tion.
I am most proud of the amount of people I’ve been able to leave with special memories.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I realize that I am big on risk taking even though I tell myself I am not. I believe I am one who is careful. It takes a minute to make some decisions. I don’t like to mess up.
But then you look at my life and see that I have been a big “yes woman” for the most part. Saying yes too fast has put me in some crazy positions. But saying yes has also allowed me to make some amazing progress. For example. I didn’t plan on being a comedian. Someone said, “you sounded like a real comedian.” Then I said, ok! I did not plan on being a DJ. But someone saw how I won $1,000 in a karaoke competition that I wasn’t supposed to be in and said you should do this for a living.” So I said ok. I came to Atlanta, which is big city slick compared to how I grew up. It was a very scary move and I fell on my face hard. I struggled for two years straight. Now, it’s the only place I want to live in.
I will say there was one time I said yes too fast and ended up hiking in a very dangerous mountain in Puerto Rico. I literally thought I was going to die for about five hours straight. I could have taken more time to think that particular yes through. But I say all this to say, sometimes it’s good to say yes and take a risk. My entire life is currently based around some very risky choices and I couldn’t be happier!
If it’s not going to kill ya, say yes and see what happens!
