Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Massey.
Charles, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Harlem, NYC, but my family is originally from Savannah, GA. I worked in securities for over 30+ years in Corporate America, but always an entrepreneur at heart. Amongst those things included being the Lead Publicist for a magazine, event promotions, network marketing and creating my own shoe line, Balancing my corporate career with my own businesses never bumped heads, but there were some very short sleep nights! Two mottos I always quoted were “Don’t say no to what you don’t know” and “Don’t talk about it, Be about it”. In May 2019, I was let go abruptly from the company which I worked for just short of 30 years. However, I had begun my acting career in January of that year as my New Year’ resolution. Since then, I have had a ton of opportunities to work in independent & major films. background/stand-in on television shows, music videos and theater in many different cities. The most valuable experience has been the knowledge gained from attending workshops, watching some of the best of the best in the industry up-close and learning from them online, too.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely has been a challenge with COVID being the main reason! Starting out in a new profession overall is tough after being in an entirely different industry, but dealing with a major crisis like that has caused way more hiccups. Positive tests that weren’t always accurate, being asymptomatic, productions shutting down for periods of time. On top of that, finding the right kind of roles and then sometimes being rejected for the ones that you really wanted. I’m grateful for all of the “No’s” because they harden your shell so to speak and make you work that much harder.
What matters most to you? Why?
Being respected amongst everyone, be it in the industry or outside of it. Love of family and friends you consider family.
Trying to do the right thing, although we are definitely not perfect.
Charitable work. I work with the James Brown Foundation, Dr. Oz’ HealthCorp Foundation and a few small organizations that work with the less fortunate.
