Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Davis.
Hi Sierra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I fell in love with makeup in 2015. Although I wasn’t that good at it, I figured I would give it a try since I can spend hours coloring and drawing. After a while of practicing the basics, I figured I should get creative and draw illusions on my face. These ideas brought out the creativity in me that I didn’t know I had. So I kept trying new things. I started my YouTube channel because I wanted to show people how easy it can be with a little bit of creativity. But honestly, I wasn’t as consistent as I should have been. I would keep buying makeup just because I saw it on the internet or on a YouTube review. Before I knew it, I had a lot of makeup that was just collecting dust. I decided to take my makeup a little more seriously. So I practiced all the time on myself. Eventually, my friends caught on to how much better I was getting and started asking me to do their makeup. So for about two years, I did makeup for free. But I still didn’t feel confident. I just couldn’t get the foundation color correct. But I grew to love makeup even more because my friends would have this boost of confidence radiating from them when they got out of the chair. Still not feeling confident in makeup, I set a couple of goals for myself. At the time, they were: learn how to do eyebrows, start a lash business, and stay consistent with my makeup. By 2018, I started my lash business and it started out rough but truthfully, I was just happy to say I had a business at the time. Lol… I didn’t realize how much it took to run a business but I did learn a lot. My favorite saying is “how bad do you want it” that saying pushes me to be a better makeup artist and businesswoman. I stayed up all hours of the night trying to build my business and I started seeing progress so I did the same for makeup. I would be at the school by 10am which was an hr away from my house. I would leave the school around 3pm to make it to work by 5pm which was also an hour away from the school. I would get off work between 2-4am and get back up at 6:30am to help my children for school. I did this until I graduated makeup school.
Although it was hard. I wanted it bad enough to sacrifice some sleep time. This was NOT easy! I thank God for my teacher, family and job for having the patience for me. I can honestly say it did pay off in the end. I became a master makeup artist and I felt accomplished. Before I could even fully graduate, I got hired for a music video and a fashion show. I was overjoyed even though these jobs weren’t paying, I figured it was still worth going after. The day of my first music video, I had to take a Covid test and sure enough, I found out I had Covid. I lost all hope because all I could think of is my career ended before it even got started. So for the first 3days in Quarantine I cried. I felt so defeated. Until I thought about that quote again “how bad do you want it” so I decided instead of feeling sorry for myself, I prayed to God for direction. So I started doing things that can help me. So the rest of the time I had left, I set goals. I learned how to create a website, how to do my own business cards, set up flyers and price lists and learned new techniques. Believe me when I say by the time I got out of quarantine, I hit the ground running. Lol, I’ve done movies, tv shows, fashion shows, photoshoots, music videos and one on one training. Where I thought my makeup career was going to be turned out to be totally different from what God set me down and got me ready for. I still can’t believe how far I’ve came.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have faced many struggles along this journey. But the one that stood out the most was trying not to compare myself with others MUAs work and styles. A lot of times, we think that if we don’t do what the in-crowd is doing, then we may not be good enough or that we’re doing something wrong. One thing I learned was to stay in my own lane. I know there are a lot of makeup artists out there but keep in mind “what’s for me is for me. “ Your clientele will come. But do what’s best for you in your lane and work your process. The results will soon follow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
