Check Out Shadia Amin’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shadia Amin.

Hi Shadia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born in Colombia and I’ve always had a passion for drawing. I grew up watching a lot of anime and I will draw in class all the time much to my teacher’s frustrations. I later was told about SCAD when a recruiter came to my school. I did both the BFA and MFA in Savannah, GA. Between degrees, I worked on a webcomic called The Automan’s Daughter, a diselpunk alternate history webcomic. After that, I moved to Atlanta in search of more opportunities. I ended up working on comics like The Amazing World of Gumball, Alloy: Electrum, Aggretsuko, and Spider-Ham: Great Power, No Responsibility. I am currently working on more graphic novels and new pitches!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I wish to say it was! The comics community can be very competitive and it can cause heads bumping. It’s really important to build a community of friends who will happily help you the same way you’d help them when they need help. After leaving Grad School, I was struggling to find work and it was thanks to a friend Sarah’s recommendation that my career was able to snowball into a consistent flow of work. I will always be grateful for her recommendation.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
the same way you’d help them when they need i. After leaving Grad School, I was struggling to find work and it was thanks to my friend Sarah Stern’s I specialize in comics! They have always been my favorite, I read a lot of manga growing up and I was not aware a career in comics was possible! I am most proud of Spider-Ham as well as Aggretsuko. I also have done some non-announced work which I’m so excited to share soon! I don’t think I have that “thing” that sets me apart from others, I’m still figuring a lot in my art, but as long as it touches at least one person, I’m happy with my work!

What’s next?
My current plans are well… making more comics! I have plans for more original stories and even work on another webcomic in the future! Maybe one day delve into more adult comics? The future is always surprising me, so I learned to never set my plans on hard rock or get too attached to them.
