Today we’d like to introduce you to Ny-Asia El.
Hi Ny-Asia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
To be honest, I was destined to walk this path. I am unsclear which ancestor I have to thank for giving me my dreams but I thank you! Since I was a young girl, I have always had a fascination with pregnancy and the woman as a whole. It wasn’t until my twenties that I learned of the term doula, and a few years after that I could proudly call myself that.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it hasn’t been. My own life had come to a screeching halt due to a car accident. I was stuck at a job that cared nothing of my well-being, I was physically impaired due to injuries sustained during the wreck and mentally and financially, I was in no position to pursue anything new. The saving grace was a new job opportunity that fueled my fire. I was lucky enough to enter the childcare realm. Tiny humans have always been the biggest part of my happiness.
I got certified while working at the school. I thought I would jump headfirst into work and I did not, lol. I attended my first birth as a student and it was divine, but I got stuck in my fear about my ability to do this. So I became a professional student. If there was a class or training I took it. There’s information to know? I gathered it. But fear stopped me from putting myself in view. It wasn’t until I found myself in spaces with other sisters did I realize I was meant for this.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
So as a doula, I offer physical, educational and emotional support to my families. I tell my families to think of me as their cousin because we’re family now. In home visits can consist of literature, physical activities, emotional practices, food & herbal preparations, whatever their needs may be. I also assist in 4th trimester healing and care as well.
At this time, I specialize in unique ingestion options for parents interested in ingesting their placenta, most common practice is Encapsulation. I offer capsules, tincture, loose leaf tea and vegan chocolates. In addition to ingestion, I also offer a Placenta salve to use topically.
My proudest moment as a birth worker I’ll never forget! I was attending a home birth for a first time young mom. She was such a gem but unfortunately, this life can be hard and her emotions were getting the best of her during her labor. She felt like quitting, not that you can, lol. I remember I asked for the room, we layed together, I embraced her and I reminded her that 1, the progression of her labor is up to her, so when she was ready we would do this, no pressure. 2. Everything she set her mind to do in preparation for tiny human, she rocked it. I spoke love into her and reassured her of the path she was walking and the love that created this being she getting ready to birth. We got up and we danced little momma out. She birthed her daughter in the comfort of her home on the very couch we shared many laughs on. I felt so proud that I could assist in turning her mood around and helped make this a pleasurable experience.
I don’t know what sets me apart from other birth workers. I do however, show up as my best self. I make it a point to be genuine and to honor my families and self. My relationship with clients doesn’t end once baby has arrived. Like I said before, we cousins now so when you need me to come cook Sunday dinner and hug on my little squish? Lol
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I absolutely love that this city has a heartbeat of its own. The culture is rich here. I do also love and sometimes hate that everyone knows each other here, lol. I love the BLACKITY BLACK BLACKNESS here. I love the black farms, whole strip of black-owned businesses. I love seeing folks walk down the street with a gallon of alkaline water in one gemed out hand and a book in the other.
What I like least like any major city, there’s a disconnect. Gentrification is obviously a thing. It seems older generations are being forgotten for dollars. Our youth are being demonized for moving to their own beat and making a way. I seriously dislike that when you say Atlanta, the first thing people associate with it is L&HH or other reality shows meanwhile the real talent and life is hidden in the underground. Can I say APD? lol
