Life & Work with Michael Carson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Carson.

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My career started as a result of dating a model in the industry. Using the trial and error method, I started perfecting my craft by taking photos for her portfolio. Needless to say, the images were horrible, but I found myself after a few seminars with well-known photographers such as Jim Hancock and Jody Jones. My initial mentor Eugene Bates also had a lot to do with my growth. The seminars changed my life by directly allowing me to land a few jobs with Jet and Ebony Magazine. The national recognition created a buzz that has remained relevant to this day. I’ve now been published in over 20 different magazine publications, I own my own magazine (shuString Magazine) and I’ve been able to promote my brand on OWN and E Network.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road hasn’t been completely smooth because I made a decision to not relocate my brand. Due to the fact that I’m a fashion photographer, remaining in the South has created a challenge as it relates to working with major fashion companies and designers. I continue to navigate through this challenge by finding creative ways to collaborate from afar.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My specialty is fashion photography and I’m known for my unique style and lighting technique. My most proud accomplishment would be starting my own fashion magazine which allowed me to develop an extensive celebrity client list. I set myself aside from others by going against the grain and not shooting traditional images that would be expected in my market.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
Please follow @shustringmagazine. We stopped publishing as a result of the pandemic, but we are coming back with great content for 2022.
