Today we’d like to introduce you to Asia White.
Hi Asia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Due to the pandemic, I had more time on my hands to get crafty and I was in need of some candles. At the time everything was locked down so I ordered a candle-making kit off Amazon. I made a few tester candles and realized that I truly enjoyed the process. As I got more comfortable making candles, I’d give them out to family and friends who would encourage me to consider selling them on the side. I took their advice and in October of 2020, I launched my first collection of candles.
It has now been a year since my first launch. I’ve launched about 4-5 new collections of candles. I’ve added wax melts, room sprays, and car diffusers to my business and am constantly thinking of new collections to add to my growing business. Since my first launch, my business has been featured in Jordan’s Journal a black-owned online magazine. I’ve participated in the Candler Black Market and are getting ready for a big two days event (Pinners Conference) this March.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been all types of bumpy! There is nothing smooth about starting a small business. I had no idea what I was doing and honestly, I still have no idea. It is tough trying to carry a business when your finances don’t really support it the way it needs to be supported. I don’t have a team or employees so trying to be the owner, the candle maker, the social media/marketing manager, and everything else while also working a full-time job as an educator is not only time-consuming, but extremely stressful.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Little Candle Company LLC?
Little Candle Company LLC is a small business aimed at providing luxury products that are nontoxic to your environment at an affordable price. My products are made with 100% soy wax and “clean scents” fragrance oils. Each candle is hand-poured accompanied by a hemp wick. There is so much power and strength behind a black woman-owned business, but I believe that my keen sense to detail, relatability, and transparency are what set my business apart from others. I don’t believe in giving my customer products that I didn’t take my time with and I don’t believe in putting up a front for sales. I’m completely open and honest with my customers, I’d like them to feel like they get me and understand what my brand stands for.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Recently I’ve been listening to the Mapped Out podcast by Maya Mapp. She gets real on there about literally everything. I really appreciate her honesty and relationship with her audience.
