Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelica Davis.
Hi Angelica, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a Florida native, born and raised in South Florida. I had never dreamed of becoming an entrepreneur. It was never on my agenda. But, I had more bills than money. I had owned two businesses before both failed, but I knew something had to give, and soon. I loved candles so I thought about a candle business.
September 2020, I started to research different candle companies and candle kits. I invest $100 into a candle kit to do test runs. I gave my candles to close friends and family to see if the HT/CT was on point. Once I had my formula down that’s when J Scents Candle was born Black Friday 2020. Black Friday was a huge hit for J Scents so the money I earned I reinvented it back into the business. I released Love Season in February and business was great. Until it wasn’t!
With any business, you have to know who your target audience are. J Scents started off to a great start but when April 2020 rolled around sales had slowed down to maybe one sale a week. I want to give up so bad but I didn’t. I did more research and pushed myself to step outside my comfort zone. By challenging myself and making a TikTok it open doors for my business. I was getting sales again. But then it STOP AGAIN!!! So I branched out again and created a different kind of candle. That’s when the cereal candle was born (Breakfast Time). I was back getting orders from people all over.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve had to learn how to balance my life. Being a full-time entrepreneur can consume your life because it is your life. So for me, balancing my time with J Scents Candles, between being a full-time teacher / PhD. student, self-care time, showing up for the other roles I play in the lives of the people I love and having somewhat of a social life. These are the things I’ve had to become aware of and I am still learning the art of balancing it all.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently a Full Time Middle School teacher. I specialize in math, I love pouring into students.
