Meet Alex Etheridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Etheridge.

Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a 28 years old Bassist/Producer and Visual artist from Auburn, AL. From a very young age, I’ve had an affinity for messing with audio and video, Learning how to alter VHS tapes and stealing my parent’s tape recorders to create foley outdoors soundtracks. Around 12, I began learning how to use basic DAWs to record little “mixtapes” with the neighborhood kids and a year later, I became enthralled with bass guitar. In High school, I met my best friend Rohan Prakash (ROHAN SOLO) who introduced me to my favorite band STS9. Spending many a sleepless night chasing them around the country, I fell in love with the live electronic scene.

In 2015, I started my own band Space Kadet with Rohan. in 2017, Thomas Garrett joined us on guitar and the project started to gain more momentum. In between 2017-2019, we played around 200 shows and have put out 2 EP’s as well as a full-length album. We’ve had the privilege of playing with such acts as Papadosio, Thievery Corporation, and Particle.

Around 2018, I created my solo act Bambi_, a nostalgia trip blending old school boombap a la Jdilla with my own flavor. In lieu of touring during the pandemic, I’ve devoted a lot of time to hone my more lofi style (Bambi_) as well as getting more into visual art.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have absolutely been struggles along the way. I spent most of my childhood in a single parent household and with the death of my mother two weeks before my senior year of high school, effectively leaving me without close role models from 18 on was tough. To add to that, the music industry feels very “fake it till you make it” so it’s hard not to have a little bit of imposter syndrome until you “make it”.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to think that I create a nice blend of nostalgia driven organic beats with tight and edgy electronic accompaniment. Whether it’s sampling old gospel and funk records or programming modular synthesizers, I try to dance on the line between new and cutting edge music tech and the sound from yesterday.

What matters most to you?
Personal Growth. Getting to see others grow and get bigger and better around you is a huge pump up for me. It will always be a constant and the better the place you are mentally, physically, emotionally, the better you can help someone else.
