Daily Inspiration: Meet Kenneth Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kenneth Johnson.

Hi Kenneth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
There’s that saying “A picture is worth a thousand words”.

My grandma kept a major collection of photos at her crib. Growing up, I used to just look at all the photos in awe because a lot of the photos were from the 1940’s through now, and are full of memories. To know that these photos lasted through time was so cool and inspiring to me. She would share stories from each photo that really put me on game about family history and traditions etc. That quality time with my grandma really helped me develop a passion for photography.

I noticed the older I got, the more I liked to capture moments with friends and family by taking pictures. For me, these photos are special because they will continue to provide future generations with memories and stories of our history. That way when family members pass on from this life, their legacy will continue to live on with the stories behind the photos.

So growing up, whenever I was with my people and there was a photo-op, I was always down to snap it up. I still consider myself as a novice photographer, but you just have to keep working & grinding to strengthen your craft. I always want to strive to improve.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been the smoothest, but that’s what makes you appreciate the process. Taking pictures is a wonderful experience. Not knowing certain camera adjustments can be really frustrating because I want each shoot to be A-1. Every shoot, I learn something new and apply that knowledge to the next one. I love to help someone make their vision come true in a photograph. The collaborative process is great and you really get to put your skills to the test. Since I’ve picked up the camera, a lot of life changes have happened to me. All these changes have helped me grow and learn that things that are worthwhile, typically take time. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Not to mention, it can also take longer when you are teaching yourself a new skill. Life hack: To everybody who wants to learn how to do anything, Youtube is your best friend. Editing photos is super lit but can be frustrating. When all is said and done, the end game is nice because you can take a picture and transform it from “nothing to something” in a sense.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
When it comes to taking pictures, I feel like my strong suit is angles. It’s ALL ABOUT THE ANGLES! What I enjoy is making sure that people are comfortable when taking pictures though because I have come across so many different personality traits. Some might be camera ready while others are nervous. Man, one time this girl had nervous gas the whole time. That was funny as h*ll. Hey, at least we could laugh about it. Bottom line is, some people are camera ready and some aren’t. That’s just how the game goes.

Also, always dare to be different! I try to stray away from the same trendy thing that everybody else does when it comes to photography. You always want to find a way to separate yourself from the others and make yourself stand out.

Lastly, customer service is key, and that’s something I take major pride in with my work.
