Inspiring Conversations with Amber Stewart of Peachy-keen Skin Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Stewart.

Amber, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m the CEO of Peachy-Keen Skin Care. I’ve been doing Esthetics since 2010. I quit the University of MS, Ole Miss in 2008 and moved to Atlanta to chase my dreams of being an Aesthetician. I attended the International School of Skin and Nail Care. I have a seven yr old named Ava, who suffers from severe eczema. Her eczema got so bad at times, especially after dairy and sugary foods. She uncontrollably scratches in her sleep. One night, she scratched her legs and arms so severely that it got infected. She was lying in bed almost paralyzed as if she couldn’t sit up or stand up out of her bed. I thought she was playing possum, so she wouldn’t have to attend school. I tried raising her out of bed to help her stand, all to realize this was more serious than I could ever imagine. She couldn’t stand or walk. I pulled her covers back, her sheets were filled with dry flakes of skin stuck to the sheets with blood blisters. These blisters looked infected, the sores and her body temperature was really warm. I literally had to carry her. We immediately rush to the nearest doctors office to get her seen immediately. The doctors told us to leave there and rush to LeBonheur emergency room, because something this severe needs to be treated at the hospital. We get there to find out that she has “Hand, Foot, and Mouth”. She contacted it with the open scars from the eczema. When we arrived, her temp was 103. Her knees and elbows had temperature of 104, that was the infection of the eczema plus hand foot and mouth combined. They tried everything to bring her temp down and heal the blisters and dry them out. It seemed to help temporarily. All of the steroids, creams, and lots of meds for a three year old. We were there for almost a week trying to heal her skin, bring her temp down and figure out what caused it.

As a mother and Esthetician, I felt as if I failed her because I study skin. Why can’t I fix my daughter? I got on my knees and asked God what to do. The next day I woke up feeling hopeful because he told me to go back to my roots. I used to work with the Indians at Bombay Salon. They literally taught me all the benefits of turmeric, and why they use it on food and for skincare. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial. They use it as medicine and beauty secrets. I started putting turmeric in her lemonade, orange juice, and pineapple juice, anything thick enough to dilute the strong mustardy taste. Within 24-48 hours of consistency, her temperature went down, her blisters dried up, and she was more mobile and in a better mood than the past few days. We got released from the hospital because of the turmeric mainly and the doctors doing what they knew to do. Government administered drugs are too strong for a toddler or anyone really. Steroids are given because they don’t want to tell you that foods and plants are also medicine. Steroids are administered so you can feel like that’s your only option to recovery. After my turmeric miracle, I thought to myself this would be a powerful ingredient to add to skin products. I also put turmeric in our meals. I take 2 capsules daily to prevent illness. Shortly after that, I created Amber Glow Vegan Skin Food. Amber Glow is turmeric-based to help with but not limited to: eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, acne, dark spots, blemishes, stretch marks, uneven skin tone, sensitive skin, ingrown hairs, razor bumps in bikini and beard and much more. I offer facials, face and body bleaching, hair removal for men and women, and an all-natural skincare line to treat almost anything.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is not for the weak. You have to mentally get motivated to even start and be consistent. My biggest struggle is just doing everything alone. My brain hurts because I feel like I never sleep. I’m always thinking of new ways to entertain my audience. Working at Salons helped me build clientele. Your true customers will follow you no matter what. Social media is my biggest accomplishment as far as gathering more clientele. People like being told what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. You can’t please everyone so don’t try. Being yourself is more authentic and generates clients that are for you no matter what, versus getting customers that follow popular opinion. Life threw me lemons and I made lemonade. I’ve relocated so many times because doing business with others never worked out for me. People always saw me as competition. Partnering with others made me bitter because I’ve been jaded so many times. Despite the tribulations, I always stayed grounded with prayer. Without God, nothing is possible.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
CONSISTENCY IS KEY. CONSISTENCY IS KEY. CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Advertise everywhere. Social media is the modern day newspaper. Hashtags, ‘boosting post, and Word of mouth also works in helping people find you. Attend networking events with vendors chasing their dreams like you. Surround yourself with people like you. You are the company you keep. Talking entrepreneurship to 9-5 workers was always a dead end. Find people chasing their dreams just like you. You will need others to encourage you and keep you motivated. Tik Tok has been my best social media outlet to create and post videos about you and your brand and sharing to Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter. People are like crabs in a barrel. We follow trends and go with people who have the most followers. Don’t get discouraged by the number of followers while separating your personal page to your new small business page. What God has for you is for you. I pass out cards everywhere I am. I wear my brand I don’t care what the occasion. Let people know who you are what you do. So what if people are tired of seeing you. You are the walking commercial. Haters are everywhere so use that energy to drive you versus addressing it.
