Today we’d like to introduce you to Earskine Todd.
Hi Earskine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out engineering audio for friends and people around the area. Once I started doing it more, I realized that we also needed imagery and a customer that came through pretty regular for recording sessions gave me a small pocket camera. So, with that I started to take photos and some personal short video clips. Nothing major. Fast forward a “few” years, and I invested my own time and money into gear and learning photography and videography. Being already acquainted with some artists and other people made it a little “easier” for me in a sense, but on the other hand you still have to be able to deliver.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course not. I am still working on my client acquisition process for one thing. The usual struggles are just keeping going. Some weeks you feel like, I knew this was what I was supposed to be doing with my life!” Others you’re like, “What was the name of that place that was hiring again?” Then there used to be times when I first started and didn’t get retainers where people would flake out at the last minute and I had told other people that I wasn’t available because I was booked. Also, having to compete with these guys that get a camera and undercut every price that they see trying to get booked, not knowing they will soon wish they didn’t.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think right now, I would be more recognized for my photography. This is because I mainly do a lot of event coverage and I post more photos of events I cover if I post anything. I do however also shoot videos and films. I think what sets me apart from others is just the way that approach a project. I’m sure if you ask anyone that has done business with me, they would tell you that I ask a lot of questions. This is just so that I am sure that we are solving whatever your problem is that you may or may not even know that you had. That’s it, I’m trying to actually solve your problem while having a good time doing what I love to do.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Not really. I was already pretty health conscience, I would think and already an entrepreneurial thinker. Maybe an important lesson would be to be prepared for “whatever” you can think MIGHT happen and then go beyond that if you can. If that means start gardening, do that. If you have the means to start a bug out shelter and you’re into that, do it. Just stop sitting around waiting to be taken care of by whomever.
