Today we’d like to introduce you to Conor Murphy.
Hi Conor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My true passion for fitness started after an injury while serving in the United States Navy. I used CrossFit to regain proper function of my elbows. When I got out of the Navy, I wanted to learn more about human movement and fitness; in reality, that’s what saved my life and gave me hope for another career.
After taking my CrossFit L1 certificate course in 2010, I couldn’t get enough. I started reading anatomy and physiology books and taking any and every course available to me; inside and outside of CrossFit. I coached at a few gyms in San Diego and ended up in St Thomas, USVI, opening the first CrossFit affiliate in the Virgin Islands. I found passion in coaching and competing. I competed in CrossFit from 2012-2017. During this process, I landed a sponsorship with Reebok which lead to my move up to the Reebok World HQ in Canton, MA.
During my time at Reebok, I branched out from CrossFit and started managing instructors from every discipline of fitness; boxing, spin, yoga, running, dance, barre, weightlifting, powerlifting, etc…
I started training and touring with celebrities in 2016 through connections of good friends in fitness. Musicians that traveled non-stop but needed to focus on health and wellness in order to continue at pace that they were moving. Artists such as; Dillon Francis, Steve Aoki, Bastille, Fall Out Boy, and many more. This lead into the training of professional athletes in the offseason.
In 2019, myself and four others started WOD on the Waves, LLC. We charted cruise ships and loaded over 3,000 people on them that wanted to not just party but work out as well.
In 2020, when the world was shut down, I worked with Big Night Entertainment Group to help use their spaces as make shift fitness studios while their clubs were closed down and gyms didn’t have the spacing to open back up. It worked so well with every discipline of fitness that after the quarantine, Big Night Fitness was born. We now run classes and events out of BNEG club venues including CrossFit, Spin, Dance, HIIT, and everything in between. We are combining nightlife, entertainment, and fitness. We have had over 1,500 participants join our classes. Creating not only a new look for working out but with combining different disciplines, we have strengthened the overall fitness community for the greater Boston area. I am so proud of all of our instructors and the team behind the scenes for making this company a success.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing is ever a smooth road. Haha. I can’t imagine I suffered anything worse than what everyone else has and is experiencing. Ideas that didn’t work. Job offers that fell through the cracks. The pandemic… Sounds cheesy and cliche, but in reality it’s been the struggles that have lead to the success. “Necessity is the mother of invention”. Someone really smart told me that and they probably got it from someone even smarter. Think of me as just small pieces of the mentors I have been fortunate enough to have around me in my life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I don’t know if there is anything that sets me apart from others. I try to absorb as much as I can from everyone that I meet. I try to listen to others instead of just always trying to tell my story. Which is interesting now because I’m just telling my story, haha. I specialize in giving a shit about others. I try to be light-hearted, high-energy, and caring. I’m far from perfect, but I think those are good guiding tenets to strive for. Another very smart person once told me the three most important characteristics of a coach were “Care, care, and care”. If you care, you will take time to make sure everything else is up to par. If you care, you will go the extra steps to make sure your people are taken care of. I try to take my experience as a coach and instructor and apply them to my company.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Like I said before, just caring about people. Caring about our team. Caring about our instructors and everyone that works with Big Night Fitness.
