Meet Mo August of Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mo August.

Mo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
August 31, 2013, we started selling BBQ in front of my buddy’s auto shop just for fun on the weekends. I really enjoy smoking food and never thought I would turn it into a business. We just did it for fun. Within 2 months. We were so busy that I bought a 24′ trailer and outfitted it ourselves. By Feb, we were up and running. We learned a lot in our first few years. In 2015 we won best food truck in Atlanta. That was quite a feat! We went against every truck, and some of those are really great! Now, just over 4 years later, I am almost finished building our second truck. It is a beautiful BBQ Bus! Should be ready Jan 1st! We hope to have a 3rd by March. As long as our great customers keep enjoying our food, I will keep on Smokin’! I’m so happy and lucky that I get to share my passion with so many people! I love putting smiles on their faces when they enjoy our food!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not smooth. We have been through many battles with cities and food truck regulations. Always a bump in the road, but it makes it interesting to say the least. I belong to an association that is very active in changing food truck legislation. Food Truck Association of Georgia is a great tool for us. It is owned and run by us. Food truckers. I can write for hours about horrible promoters who try to get rich off of us.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Smokin’ Mo’s BBQ – what should we know?
We are known for very huge, extremely generous portions! Every plate that leaves the truck is delicious! We have very special sides and really great BBQ. My good food, my personality and interaction with customers, and the looks of our trucks is what sets us apart.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My son Matt has been with me from day 1. I couldn’t have done it without him. My wife has also worked her ass off since the beginning. I have 2 more sons that are busy with careers, but help as much as they can. Without my family, this could not have happened.
