Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevron Johnson.
Hi Kevron, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2017, I had a full-time salary job before I graduated college. It was cool, I guess. Until it wasn’t. About six months later, I had quickly outgrown that job (aka I got fired). Realized I was working way too hard for not enough pay so I lost interest and it started showing in my work ethic. Oh well. I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I didn’t realize how much I hated working a regular job. This was enlightening.
Had nothing but free time now. I had been contemplating getting my real estate license for a while and figured now is the best time. I ain’t doin nothing else.
I signed up for a real estate school, coincidentally 2 minutes down the road from my college. I took the fast track. Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm for a month straight. I fell asleep almost every day in the back of class and used my lunch breaks to take more naps. Not because the class was boring. I actually had a great teacher. But I have Sleep Apnea and it be kickin my ass sometimes.
Nonetheless, I passed the class anyway. Signed up for the state exam immediately after and failed…..by 3 points 😐… I was heated. Went home, studied for an hour or so and did a retake a couple of days later. Aced it.
So boom, I got my license and I already knew what brokerage I wanted to join. No not kElLeR wiLLiAms. I joined a small Female Black Owned Firm called Williams & Co International Realty. I had met the owner through a mutual friend some months back and I liked her energy. It was an easy decision for me. She had also just started the brokerage around the same time I got my license, so there was only a small handful of us.
We were a little cramped in a small office downtown but continued to grow. Long story short, it’s now the largest Female Black Owned Brokerage in GA. Not too shabby.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Hell Nah. My first client took almost eight months to close 🤦🏾♂️. I was heated, once again. My second client, however took a couple of weeks. I was much more enthusiastic after that one.
Main problem was navigating the real estate industry and realizing that there are a lot of avenues to take. I just couldn’t figure out which one. I wanted them all to be honest. But that’s almost impossible.
Another big issue were clients that would waste my time. Want me to drive all around the world to show you homes but don’t have a downpayment saved or a preapproval letter. I’ve since then learned to fire clients.
I soon realized that what I enjoyed most was putting people that looked like me into their first home. So as of now, my main lane is first-time homebuyers. Black ownership is wonderful.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in educating people in their journey to homeownership. What sets me apart as my ability to negotiate. I’m pretty frugal myself. So those carries over on to my clients in the form of saving more money long term.
I’m most proud of the BLACK owned brokerage I am a part of. Williams & Co International Realty.
What I want readers to know is that if you are currently renting an apt, you’re wasting money. I would highly recommend you at least begin the steps to homeownership. Rent payments do nothings for you. Mortgage payments build equity. I get it, maybe you don’t want to live there all your life. That’s ok. If you want to move, sell the home. Nine times out of ten, you’ll make money anyway.
Do not try buying a home for the first time yourself. Use an agent. We are of little to no cost to you. Even if you don’t choose me (which you should), take the time to work with an agent. Someone experienced to guide you through the process.
What are your plans for the future?
The future is here! I’ve since then become a team lead in the real estate brokerage, and gained a new specialty working with Rent-To- Own clients. I am also currently running a vacation property management company and looking to scale for more units.
