Meet LaToya Dwight

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaToya Dwight.

Hi LaToya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a wife, mother, sister, and loyal friend, and I’m the Founder of The Fibroid Pandemic. I created the company to help provide resources for humans with a uterus seeking to overcome uterine fibroids. It all started as a result of a personal diagnosis and an arduous journey of perseverance!

My then OBGYN of 12+ years confirmed the diagnosis of uterine after attempting to replace my IUD. Her immediate and only suggestion was to have a hysterectomy.

She explained that in the medical field there’s no known cause, but “fibroids are like kudzu,” if you have them surgically removed, they’ll just grow back. With minimal information, I left the doctor’s office with a barrage of unanswered questions, a mix of emotions and felt as though my body betrayed me. Things got worse when I received a call a couple of days later from the OBGYN’s office to schedule the hysterectomy. I adamantly refused and that was the beginning of my fibroid healing journey!

After deciding to get back into the drivers seat of life and take responsibility of my own healing, I experienced debilitating symptoms including extreme lethargy, menorrhagia, borderline anemia, pain during sexual intercourse, constipation, inflammation, bloating, brain fog, hair loss, skin breakouts, and much more!

Over a two years span, I joined several coaching and detox programs, went vegan, vegetarian, ate for my blood type, explored, yoga, qui gong, and many other remedies. I eventually decided to have uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). After posting on my personal Facebook page about my UFE experience, I received an outpour of support. At that very moment, I knew that God had called me to help guide others through their fibroid healing journey as well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Experiencing uterine fibroids has been nothing short of a rough road. Some of the greatest struggles were dealing with the fibroid bulk symptoms especially the menorrhagia, painful sexual intercourse, inflammation and bloating. And having “accidents” and suffering in silence were beyond debilitating! Oftentimes I’d be called a diva or be accused of over-exaggerating my symptoms by some of my closest family, colleagues, and associates.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
By profession, I am an Employee Benefit Consultant in which I stand on the front line negotiating B2B group contracts with insurance companies on behalf of employers who range in size of 100 – 5000 employees. By passion, I am a wellness advocate who thrives to help eliminate period poverty and unnecessary hysterectomies and provide resources to humans with a uterus who are seeking fibroid healing.

What’s next?
My plan for the future is to continue expanding my 5K that I’ve personally curated called the Run F.A.R. 5K Run/Walk. FAR is an acronym for fibroid awareness and resources. It will be held annually on the third weekend in July. The second annual Run F.A.R. 5K will be held on Saturday, July 23rd, 2022 at Still Family Farm in Powder Springs, GA.
