Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Jayy.
Hi Nikki, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Music is my escape from so many things. Good and bad. Since a kid music has always been there for me. From the age of 3-4, I entered “My World” through dance. “My World” is the place that music takes me. I remember being the shyest little girl but having so many big ideas that I wanted to share with the world. But I felt like I couldn’t. So, when you see the young artist and woman I am today, you have to understand that she was first a little girl who dreamt of all these big, beautiful things for herself. But, little did she know she was the only person stopping her from achieving them. I think it was during high school when I first really got into poetry and so before I became a songwriter, I was a poet. Eventually, turning my poetry into lyrics and painting the most beautiful picture with my voice. I have four songs and one music video out right now, a crowd favorite called “Act Different” and my most recent drop called “Rosé”. I feel nothing other than blessed to be able to share my soul with anyone who is willing to listen and I see no boundaries in the way of what I will achieve. I feel like my story has so much detail to it already, but I also know that my journey is already written and will come with more that most can imagine. I just have to show you.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Baby, if it was a smooth road wouldn’t everyone be where they want to be right now? This road is bumpy, it’s rigid, it’s slippery, and I’ve broken a few limbs around the way. HAHA. No, but seriously, that’s what I talk to God for. This is what I have many and friends for. If not for them, I might not have gotten up every time. Losing my dad is the only struggle that really knocked me down, but if you knew him you know he birthed a legend; a fighter. Even when he was here, the LAST thing he would allow me to do is fall and not pick myself back up. I miss that man every day like it was the first day I ever had to live without him. Other than that, I struggled within myself and as an artist when trying to find and create a balanced life at Howard U. as a student. Life is so crazy, but I love it. Everyone has struggles, I just ask God to guide me the best way he can.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a recording artist. An entertainer. A multipotentialite. Supernova even. I specialize in recording music, songwriting, modeling, and always being Nikki Jayy. It’s so funny to me because at Howard, during my first two years, I was known on campus for my runway modeling. Then I popped out and started doing music as well and now it’s like WOW she makes music and is amazing at that too?!?! I take a lot of pride in my lyricism and ability to paint pictures in people’s minds through my music. It was my Howard Homecoming halftime performance that really set it off on campus. I performed twice that weekend after three years of not performing and I came back to New York from D.C. with over 400 new supporters. It still shocks me to this day. Mama, I’m a star!
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Aside from God, I am nothing without my parents! My mom is my twin and somehow even 10+ years later, my dad is still finding ways to make my dreams come true. My aunt Coco, Bebe, and Shari have been my cheerleaders and support system since the day I was born and are constantly helping me navigate the world as a young woman. My cousins Aliyah, Darrell, and Krystal never miss a beat in popping out for me and they are always the loudest in the room. I am so blessed to have them beside me. Also, my handful of friends and mentors that deal with me and are there whenever I need them know that when the time comes, we’re going up together. I also have to thank Lamb, Craig, Maiz, and Lauren (aka my team) for sticking with me, listening to my ideas and helping me execute them properly. They are with me off the strength of who Nikki Jayy is and who I will be and I appreciate them so so much.
You know I really need to start practicing my award show thank you’s.
