Meet Rajan Mistry of S3 Catering & 1218 Kitchen Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rajan Mistry.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since I was young, I’ve had a passion for food. Growing up, I was always experimenting with new recipes and trying to put my own twist on traditional cooking. As the years went on, I chose the more conventional career path. However, I continued to cook for monthly gatherings and small parties alongside my job as an IT consultant. After 15 years of IT work, I was presented with an opportunity to cater a much larger event than I was accustomed to catering. At the time, it just felt like that this was my chance to move from working small gigs to servicing bigger events. It was daunting and exciting all that the same time. I decided to pursue the opportunity and of course, after I got my first taste of specialty catering, there was no going back.

Has it been a smooth road?
As with any journey, there are ups and downs. There were so many new challenges all at once….I changed careers after 15 years, I was in a niche market with no formal training, I was running my own company for the first time and I had a family to support. As if that wasn’t enough, I was no longer working a “9 to 5”. Our business requires long working hours (servicing events), volume food production, travel and pre and post production planning. Finding the time to balance work and life was near impossible. It was also very difficult to find dependable people that wanted to work in this fast-paced environment.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with S3 Catering & 1218 Kitchen Group – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are full service catering company specializing in South Asian and multicultural cuisine. We take an out of the box approach to traditional food. Our clients appreciate creativity and giving their guests a culinary experience. We have many staples items in our culture, however the current generation is wanting something more and different. I take pride in what we do and thank our clients for creating a trust in us to really test the waters with items that your local restaurants are unable to produce. People eat with their eyes, so we are very particular on presentation and the way we showcase our production.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
First Atlanta was labeled as “Motown of the South” with all the talented music artists. We then became “Silicon Valley of the South” for our IT presence. With all the recent movie productions, “Hollywood of the East” has been floating around. With the influx of food culture, are we now “Culinary South”? Yes, you read it right….no “in the or of the”. Atlanta has its own culinary identity. Where would you like to dine tonight, West ATL, Midtown, Buckhead, EAV, Inman Park, VA Highlands, Vinings, Brookhaven, Bu-Hi….shall I continue?

You ask what I like least about our city? Umm, the summer humidity???
