Meet Megan Barr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Barr.

Hi Megan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started capturing images ten years ago. I have always been fascinated with composing photos – freezing moments of time. About seven years ago, I branched out to photographing professionally in Cheyenne, Wyoming. When I moved back to Atlanta and more family members and friends started requesting sessions, my confidence grew, and I branched out even further to photographing weddings. Now, I will photograph anything. Some of my favorite types of sessions are fresh48 sessions where I travel to hospital rooms to photograph newborn babies. I also really enjoy maternity sessions event sessions- such as prom or graduation, milestone, infant, and boudoir sessions.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I have hit speed bumps along the way. Mostly due to equipment costs coupled with a lack of confidence in myself. If I could go back five years and give myself some advice I would say- “Make the investment and believe in yourself”. Then again, if I had told younger me I would be photographing multiple weddings a year and hosting successful, fully-booked mini sessions and own my own business- I don’t know if I would have believed me!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What sets me apart is my editing process and my prices. I edit every single photo that I take, and not just light editing- full cosmetic editing. I want you to look and feel you’re most beautiful! I do not want anything to distract from you in your images. I often joke with clients that I will just make the school bus/trashcan/air conditioning unit in the background disappear! I truly enjoy editing my images, which were already great, to make them something special. As far as my prices, for the quality of my images, the price cannot be beat. I have made a promise to myself and my clientele that I will keep my prices beyond competitive. I am affordable because I really believe that every family deserves breathtaking photos- even though not every family can afford typical photographers. At just $100 for an hour-long session and weddings starting at $800- I am a steal. I also do not charge a fee for photo rights and downloads. You pay me once, and then you receive your full-quality images via client portal to download.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would not call the risks I have taken HUGE. Luckily, I have a husband and family that are a fantastic village to support me.

I would say the biggest personal risk I have taken was photographing a same-sex couples wedding and engagement. This was a personal dilemma for me, which I had very open conversations about with my brides and prayed about. They were appreciative of my honesty, and I was beyond appreciative of them for being patient as I made what I viewed as a very important decision for myself and my business. In the end, I decided the best way I could show love was including everyone in my clientele regardless of religion, sexual orientation, or race. Because of that decision, I have photographed a wider group of astonishingly beautiful people. I have learned so much more about the world around me than I would have if I had stuck to my comfort zone or listened to the opinions of those around me. I followed my heart and made up my mind that sharing my gift, given to me by God, with EVERYONE who approached me with a request was what I was called to do! Our gifts are meant to be shared and all we are called to do is love one another.
