Today we’d like to introduce you to Horror in Color.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As a queer couple, our love for Horror has always been part of our connection. Both of our backgrounds involve Horror, so we had a mutual familiarity with local creatives running things behind-the-scenes. Too often, we would find ourselves frustrated at this kind of singular, cis, straight, white vision of the genre that did not allow space for other voices.
In 2019, we took action by putting together our skills (journalism, graphic design, etc.) to create Horror in Color – a platform aimed at elevating marginalized voices in Horror. Together, our goal is to paint the genre with colors of intersectional diversity, inclusion, and equity for women, People of Color, LGTQIA+, and people with disabilities.
Accessibility was key in these efforts. In 2020, we launched our free virtual “LiveSceam” series that has since brought about guests ranging from American Horror Story’s Angelica Ross to music superstar Tinashe. We’ve found a growing community with a willful drive to change the future of Horror.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Our growing roster of events and content have proven to be technically challenging at times. We started our virtual events at the onset of the 2020 pandemic, so we had to find a way to do organize, edit, plan, and more between the two of us,
What really helped on that front was collaborating with like-minded creators like Sade Sellers of Afro Horror, Michelle Halloween, Xero Gravity, Tabetha McNeal, and so many others.
Having different hosts and guests allowed us to place emphasis on the concept of Horror in Color as a growing community.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Connecting Horror creatives and fans with impactful work in the Horror genre has been our specialty.
Celebrating visionaries who will transform Horror has been our proudest achievement.
Our intersectional identities, firm intention, as well as our reverence for music and fashion set us apart.
