Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernando Decillis.
Hi Fernando, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Photography started out as a hobby in my early 20’s. Soon after, I went to school for photography at Portfolio Center here in Atlanta. Also, I assisted top photographers from all over the country. Slowly built a strong enough portfolio to shop around to magazines and ad agencies.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has never been smooth. This career is full of up and downs. For me, the biggest struggle is to stay busy and positive on the downs. You can go weeks, a month without a job. That’s tough!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a photographer who specializes in photographing people of all walks of life. For documentary projects, editorial portraits or ad campaigns. In the commercial world, I’m known for my authentic approach. Always trying to keep things as real and authentic as possible. It’s a really hard thing to do when everything is staged. Even though I love shooting ads, I feel my best work comes from my documentary projects. It’s where I learn the most and where I grow as a photographer.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think picking photography as my career was a major risk. I was risking stability and comfort. I’m glad I did it. But also think that I wouldn’t have taken those risks if I had a family to raise. If you’re young or are only responsible for yourself, I think you should take all the risks! It gets tricky with raising kids.
