Today we’d like to introduce you to Tianyi Xie.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
When I was a child, my parents were often away from home because of work. I had only TV and comics to spend my day with, and that’s when my interest in drawing started. Having these fictional friends with me every day made me feel not alone. Then I started to imagine my stories with them, and I would draw them. Gradually I realized that I liked the feeling of drawing and I started to create my own stories and characters. This gradually made my goal clear, and I wanted to keep developing this thing and sharing my spiritual world to people.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was a struggle, not only for objective reasons but also for my internal wandering. I am a somewhat sensitive person, so I often doubt myself on the road to growth. I’m working on getting over that, but I don’t hate the sensitive part. It brings me inspiration.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At this stage, I am a freelance illustrator and I am studying conceptual art at university. This has allowed me to be exposed to a lot of work and instruction in the industry and in art. I have always maintained a learning attitude and have grown through work and study. I think my experience has given me a more mature mindset and creative style.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I loved the privacy of being home alone when I was a child, holding my paintbrush and topping it off with animation on the TV. The world became small and only this room remained.
