Conversations with Rho Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rho Thomas.

Hi Rho, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a lawyer by training but got my start with money coaching through my family’s money journey. Back in 2016, my husband and I looked at our finances after having our first child and realized we had over $670,000 of debt and a negative $342,000 net worth. The debt was about $200,000 on our mortgage, $10,000 on a car loan, and the rest was student loans. We started researching how to turn our finances around and started working on paying off our debt.

In the following years, I basically followed the bread crumbs to where I am now. I started a blog sharing our journey out of debt and the things we had been learning. I helped friends, family, and colleagues with their money. I offered a money training for the first years at the law firm I practiced at. But it was all very much a hobby.

The start of 2020 really hit me because it dawned on me how quickly the ten years between 2010 and 2020 flew by. Right after that, the pandemic hit, and I truly saw how short and unpredictable life can be. I decided I didn’t want to keep talking about this idea I had but not doing much to move it forward. I officially started my business, started sharing money tips on social media, and launched my podcast, Wealthyesque®, to reach more people and share my knowledge more broadly. People outside my personal circle started reaching out to me for help with their money, and I could really see the impact I was making. In 2021, I left the practice of law to go full-time with my coaching business. It felt like something that had been tugging at me since I started my blog back in 2018, and I didn’t want to look up years down the line wondering “what if.”

Although I loved the legal work I did, the work I’m doing now lights me up more. I help lawyers learn to manage their personal finances and unlock the freedom that comes with being in control of your money, and I love it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a fairly smooth road so far. The main struggle for me was my decision to leave the law, including the fear of trying something new and my thoughts about what people would think about me leaving the law to be a coach. Ultimately, I decided I would rather try and it not work out than never try and wonder “what if.” And as for other people’s thoughts, I reminded myself that everyone will have their own thoughts about anything I do, but I’m the one who has to live this life.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a money coach, I help lawyers manage their money mindset and implement strategies to achieve their goals with their personal finances. I’m really proud of the time and attention I put into thinking about my clients and how I can help them achieve their goals without sacrificing their quality of life. I think what sets me apart from others is that I’ve been in the exact same shoes as my clients and know firsthand how important your mindset is to your ability to implement and stick with specific strategies. I help my clients change the way they think about themselves and their money to ultimately change the way they manage their money forever.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
In whatever you want to do, whether it’s learning to manage your personal finances, starting a business, or anything else, believing you can do it is the first step. Until you believe it’s possible for you—not just possible for other people—you won’t take action to do it. Build your belief in yourself, and get to work.
