Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Lane.
Erika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up, I was always considered a creative person. It started from my curiosity in cinematography and painting. I wanted to learn as much as I could about the arts and as I did, I quickly fell in love. Both became outlets for my self-expression. It wasn’t long before I started taking my creativity to social media. I opened my first successful online store in college selling my original artwork. I was inspired by the positive feedback from my community and used that momentum to transition into experimenting with videography more. After meeting my husband, I started my next creative project working with him. Through TikTok, we recreate funny scenes from some of our favorite black movies, shows or even interviews. Today I live in Atlanta creating content with him and painting full-time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t know if I’d say it was smooth but definitely challenging and, to me, that’s expected. Persevering through my struggles taught me a lot. For example, pricing my artwork was a major bump in the road for me. Starting off, I struggled and I didn’t know my self-worth as an artist yet. It was uncomfortable but facing the challenge helped me find my confidence as an artist in the real world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an artist specializing in eye-catching visuals. From my hand-painted portraits to my viral skits for social media, I am known for having special attention to detail. I see art where others may not think to look. Sharing that gift and vision is what I’m most proud of.
What were you like growing up?
I was inquisitive. I had a lot of questions about everything growing up. To people, I didn’t know I was quite and shy most of the time but to my family and friends, I was the complete opposite. Energetic and loud, I was only comfortable around those closest to me. I loved to express myself through anything artistic. Singing, drawing, and dancing were most fun for me. At the same time, I also showed a lot of natural talent in sports. While still pursuing arts in school, I played both soccer and softball competitively.
