Life & Work with Kaitlynn Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaitlynn Young.

Hi Kaitlynn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey as an artist at very young age. I am self-taught. I started drawing as early as the age of six but I didn’t take it seriously until I was about 11. From then on, I migrated to different art forms such as painting, sketching, temporary tattooing, etc. I have had the pleasure to paint pictures for people, nonprofits, and custom murals for local businesses. With everything I do, I always gravitate back to tattoos. I would spend my days doodling on myself in class with pens and markers in middle school. My mom would tell me to stop using pens and markers to draw on myself because she couldn’t stand it. Eventually, one day she went to the store and bought my first set of tattoo pens. She thought that was more safe than using regular pens. From that point on, I was hooked! Every chance I could, I would draw designs on myself. Eventually, my mom purchased me some henna and gave me the courage to start offering henna/temporary tattoo services to my friends. I was also bugging my mom about wanting a job once I turned 16, and she made me realize that my talent was my job! And that I had to organize my time and talent like a business. Now I am a 16 years old entrepreneur that offers temporary tattoos and face/body painting!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Actually, so far, Yes! I have a lot to learn and a long way to go, but I am enjoying the journey. I know there will be struggles so much as client retention and marketing but I believe that I will handle those obstacles well with help from my supportive family.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a self-taught teen artist that specializes in body artistry. I host face painting parties for school age children, body and canvas paint parties for teens (15+) and adults, and I offer henna/temporary tattoo services for all ages. I am known for my portrait drawing and paintings. I am most proud of how far I have gotten myself just by practice and dedication to my craft. I have never had an art class or instructor to teach me any techniques (although I hope to find a great mentor one day). I believe that my age sets me apart from most artists in my field. There aren’t many young henna/temporary tattoo artists in my state

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
